24 claims: 2 independent, 22 dependent

  1. 1
A fluorescence endoscopy video system (50) configured for operating in at least two of color, fluorescence/reflectance and fluorescence/fluorescence imaging modes, the system including:a single multi-mode light source (52, 72) for producing both UV/blue excitation light for fluorescence imaging and illumination light having red, green and blue components, a plurality of filters (76A, 76B, 76C) positionable between the light source (52, 72) and an endoscope (60), each of the filters positioned stationarily during an imaging mode and transmitting substantially all the UV/blue excitation light intensity and selectively transmitting a predetermined portion of one or more of the red, green and blue component intensity;an endoscope (60) for directing the filtered light into a patient to illuminate a tissue sample (58) and to collect reflected light or fluorescence light produced by the tissue;a single camera (100) positioned to receive the light collected by the endoscope, the camera including: a single color image sensor (104) having one or more spectral filters (118) positioned in front of the color image sensor for selectively blocking the UV/blue excitation light and transmitting light at wavelengths other than the UV/blue excitation light, wherein the red, green and blue component intensity of the illumination light is adjusted with one of the filters (76A, 76B, 76C) so that the reflected light captured by the color image sensor through the spectral filter(s) (118) produces one of a color image with proper white balance, a fluorescence/reflectance image or a fluorescence/fluorescence image;and one or more optical imaging components (112) that project images onto the color image sensor (104);an image processor/controller (64) that receives image signals from the color image sensor (104) and forms video signals representing color, fluorescence/fluorescence or fluorescence/reflectance images;and a color video monitor (66) for displaying a white-balanced color image, a fluorescence/reflectance image or a fluorescence/fluorescence image, or a combination thereof, from the image signals.
  2. 19
A light source (52) for use with an endoscopic examination system configured for operating in at least two of color, fluorescence/reflectance and fluorescence/fluorescence imaging modes and having a single color image sensor (104) with one or more blocking filters (118) positioned to block UV/blue excitation light from reaching the color image sensor, the light source comprising:a lamp (70);a plurality of interchangeable filters (76A, 76B, 76C), each of the filters positioned stationarily during an imaging mode to selectively pass substantially all the UV/blue excitation light and transmitting a predetermined portion of one or more of red, green and blue illumination light from the lamp, wherein one of the filters produces modified white light from the lamp by adjusting the red, green and blue illumination light intensities such that the intensity of the red, green and blue light reaching the color image sensor through the one or more blocking filters (118) positioned in front of the color image sensor produces an image with proper white balance when imaging a white standard.
