  1. 1
A tire monitoring device and patch assembly (200, 300) for mounting the monitoring device (204, 304, 320) in a tire (71);the patch assembly (200, 300) comprising a patch (202) adapted to be connected to the tire (71);the patch (202) having a base (206) and a tube section (208) projecting from the base (206);the base (206) and tube section (208) defining a cavity (210) having a longitudinal axis disposed substantially perpendicular to the base (206);and an electronic monitoring device (204, 304, 320) having a body;at least a portion of the electronic monitoring device (204, 304, 320) being disposed in the cavity (210), the patch (202) defining an opening (212) to the cavity (210), the opening (212) having a maximum width dimension, and the body of the electronic monitoring device (204, 304, 320) having a maximum width dimension;wherein the body of the electronic monitoring device (204, 304, 320) has an outer surface that is curved;wherein an inner surface (214) of the cavity (210) defined by the base (206) and the tube section (208) of the patch (202) is curved to substantially match the outer surface of the electronic monitoring device (204, 304, 320);and wherein the maximum width dimension of the opening (212) of the patch (202) is smaller than the maximum width dimension of the electronic monitoring device (204, 304, 320), characterized in that the body of the monitoring device (204, 304, 320) is substantially spherical, an oblong sphere, or teardrop shaped.
  2. 4
The assembly of any one of claims 1-3, further comprising a layer of bonding material (20) between the patch (202) and the innerliner (75).
  3. 5
The assembly of any one of claims 1-4, wherein more than half of the body of the monitoring device (204, 304, 320) is disposed within the cavity (210).
  4. 6
The assembly of any one of claims 1-5, wherein the body of the monitoring device (204, 304, 320) is substantially spherical or an oblong sphere, and defines a retraction opening (220);the retraction opening (220) being disposed outside of the cavity (210) defined by the base (206) and tube section (208).
  5. 7
The assembly of any one of claims 1-6, wherein the body of the monitoring device (204, 304, 320) is substantially spherical or an oblong sphere, and defines a breathing tube (219) having an opening;the opening of the breathing tube (219) being positioned outside the cavity (210) of the patch (202).
  6. 8
The assembly of any one of claims 1-5, wherein the body of the monitoring device (204, 304, 320) is teardrop shaped, and the electronic monitoring device (204, 304, 320) includes an antenna (307);the antenna (307) being disposed substantially perpendicular to the base (206).
  7. 10
A method for removing a tire monitoring device from a patch (202) for mounting the monitoring device (204, 304, 320) in a tire (71);wherein at least half of the body of the monitoring device (204, 304, 320) is disposed within a cavity (210) defined by a base (206) and a tube section (208) projecting from the base (206) of the patch (202);the cavity (210) having an opening (212) having a resting size;the method comprising the steps of providing the monitoring device (204, 304, 320) with an outer surface that is curved and the cavity (210) with an inner surface (214) that is curved to substantially match the outer surface of the monitoring device (204, 304, 320);stretching the opening (212) of the cavity (210) to a size larger than the resting size of the opening (212);and removing the monitoring device through the stretched opening (212), characterized in that the body of the monitoring device (204, 304, 320) is substantially spherical, an oblong sphere, or teardrop shaped.
