23 claims: 3 independent, 20 dependent

  1. 1
A method for calibrating robotic picker mechanisms in automated storage library systems, comprising:detecting a calibration mark (200) associated with a storage library (100) with at least one sensor (50), wherein the at least one sensor detects the calibration mark from a first position (1) and a second position (2), the first position (1) and the second position (2) separated by an offset distance;determining a relative shift in the detected calibration mark (200) detected from the first position (1) and the second position (2);and determining a distance between the calibration mark (200) and a reference position based on the shift in the detected calibration mark (200) the offset distance, and a focal length associated with the at least one sensor (50) used to detect the calibration mark (200).
  2. 12
A robotic mechanism (18) for transporting storage devices in a storage library, comprising:a gripper assembly (20) for handling storage devices;a sensor (50) associated with the gripper assembly;and at least one controller (4), characterised in that the at least one controller and sensor are adapted to detect a calibration mark (200) from a first position (1), detect the calibration mark (200) from a second position (2), determine a shift in the detected calibration mark (200) from the first position (1) and the second position (2) relative to the sensor, and determine a distance between a reference position and the calibration mark (200) based on the shift in the calibration mark (200) the distance between the first position (1) and the second position (2) and a focal length associated with the sensor (50).
  3. 23
A storage library system, comprising:a housing adapted to include storage slots and one or more media drives;and a robotic mechanism as claimed in any of claims 12 to 22.
