  1. 1
A method for detecting a hand-drawn shape, comprising:receiving ink input including a plurality of strokes;generating (902) an image grid and positioning the strokes from the input ink on the generated image grid;marking (904) grids of the image grid that are intersected by the strokes of the ink input;flood-filling (906) outmost blank grids of the image grid until reaching the marked grids, wherein flood-filling outmost blank grids begins with the exterior edges of the image grid;flood-filling (908) islands of still blank grids of the image grid until reaching the marked grids;identifying candidate containers being closed drawing objects as the marked grids around the flood-filled islands and recording the strokes of the marked grids that form the candidate containers;checking (910) that the container candidates are valid containers, a valid container being a closed container forming an enclosed area, wherein checking that the container candidates are valid containers comprises separating any strokes that are shared between container candidates, wherein separating any strokes comprises computing the average distance of the points of the strokes to the center of each candidate container that shares the strokes and assigning a stroke as belonging to the container candidate with the shortest average distance of the points of the strokes to its center;and detecting any connector candidates among the marked grids of strokes including all strokes not forming a candidate container, a connector forming a bridge between candidate containers.
  2. 23
A computer-readable medium having computer-executable instructions for performing the method of one of claims 1 to 22.
  3. 24
A computer system for detecting a hand-drawn shape, comprising:a chart detector (204) for receiving ink input including a plurality of strokes;means adapted to generate (902) an image grid and position the strokes from the input ink on the generated image grid;a container detector (212) operably coupled to the chart detector for detecting a candidate container within ink input, wherein the container detector is adapted to mark (904) grids of the image grid that are intersected by the strokes of the ink input, flood-fill (906) outmost blank grids of the image grid beginning with the exterior edges of the image grid until reaching the marked grids, flood-fill (908) islands of still blank grids of the image grid until reaching the marked grids, identify candidate containers being closed drawing objects as the marked grids around the flood-filled islands and record the strokes of the marked grids that form candidate containers, and check (910) that the container candidates are valid containers, a valid container being a closed container forming an enclosed area, wherein checking that the container candidates are valid containers comprises separating any strokes that are shared between container candidates, wherein separating any strokes comprises computing the average distance of the points of the strokes to the center of each candidate container that shares the strokes and assigning a stroke as belonging to the container candidate with the shortest average distance of the points of the strokes to its center;and a connector detector (214) operably coupled to the chart detector for detecting a connector candidate among the marked grids of strokes including all strokes not forming a candidate container, a connector forming a bridge between candidate containers.
