  1. 1
A vehicle framing system for framing a vehicle body from a plurality of separate body components, at least one of the vehicle body components having a reference surface, comprising:an assembly station (16) having spaced-apart frame members (22);a vehicle carrier (14) which supports the vehicle body components (20) in a preassembled condition at said assembly station;characterized in that the vehicle framing system further comprises: at least two docking stations (26) secured to each frame member at predetermined positions;a tool arm (40) associated with each docking station (26);a robot (52) associated with each tool arm for moving said tool arm between an assembly position in which each said tool arm (40) abuts against its associated docking station (26) at a predetermined position, and a vehicle loading position in which each tool arm (40) is disengaged from its associated docking station (26);a tool arm clamp (54) associated with each docking station (26) which clamps said tool arm (40) to its associated docking station (26) at said predetermined position when said tool arm in said assembly position;and at least one reference block (60) with its associated framing clamp (64) secured to each tool arm (40), each framing clamp (64) releasably clamping its associated tool arm across the at least one reference surface to maintain it in contact with its reference block (60), on at least one vehicle body component to thereby maintain said vehicle body components at a predetermined position relative to each other.
  2. 17
A method for framing a vehicle body from a plurality of separate body components, at least one of the vehicle body components having a reference surface, comprising the steps of:moving the vehicle body in a preassembled condition to an assembly station (16) between spaced apart framing members (22);characterized in that the method further comprises the step of: moving a plurality of tool arms (40) by robots into abutment with docking stations (26) formed on the framing members (22) so that the tool arms (40) are at predefined positions with respect to the framing members (22), one robot being associated with each tool arm;clamping said tool arms (40) to said docking stations (26);and clamping said tool arms (40) to beam body reference surfaces to maintain them in contact with the stationary reference blocks (60) mounted onto said tool arm to thereby maintain the vehicle body components in a predetermined position relative to each other.
