  1. 1
Claims of equivalent WO 2004006500 A2 CLAIMS What is claimed is:1. A controller (100) comprising: a physical layer (PHY) (110) configured to be coupled to a phone line;and a media access control (MAC) (108) configured to be coupled to the PHY (110), wherein the MAC (108) is separated from the PHY (110) by a partition;wherein the partition enables the MAC (108) to be implemented as a separate circuit from the PHY (110) such that the MAC (108) can be modified during and after a design process while leaving the PHY (110) intact.
  2. 2
A system for networking computers in a home phone line network, the system comprising:a first controller ( 100) that includes : a physical layer (PHY) (110) configured to be coupled to a phone line;and a media access control (MAC) (108) configured to be coupled to the PHY (110), wherein the MAC (108) is separated from the PHY (110) by a partition, wherein the partition enables the MAC (108) to be implemented as a separate circuit from the PHY (110) such that the MAC (108) can be modified during and after a design process while leaving the PHY (110) intact;and a second controller (114) configured to be coupled to the first controller (100).
  3. 3
A method for optimizing a design of a network controller (100), the network controller (100) including a physical layer (PHY) (110) and a media access control (MAC) (108), the PHY (110) being configured to be coupled to a phone line, the MAC (108) being configured to be coupled to the PHY (110), the method comprising the step of (a) separating the MAC (108) from the PHY (110) by a partition, wherein the partition enables the MAC (108) to be implemented as a separate circuit from the PHY (110) such that the MAC (108) can be modified during and after a design process while leaving the PHY (110) intact.
  4. 4
The controller, system or method of claims 1, 2, or 3 wherein the PHY (110) is an application-specific integrated circuit.
  5. 5
The controller, system or method of claims 1, 2, or 3 wherein the PHY (110) is a signal processor.
  6. 6
The controller, system or method of claims 1, 2, or 3 wherein the PHY (110) is a digital signal processor.
  7. 7
The controller, system or method of claims 1, 2, or 3 wherein the MAC (108) is a programmable device.
  8. 8
The controller, system or method of claims 1, 2, or 3 wherein the MAC (108) is a programmable logic device.
  9. 9
The system or method of claims 2 or 3 wherein the first controller (100) is a Home Phone Line Networking Alliance controller. 10. The system or method of claims 2 or 3 wherein the second controller (114) is an Ethernet controller.
