Stopper for medical fluid Transfer

Abstract

A transfer set for transferring fluids from a first container, such as a conventional vial, to a second container, such as a conventional syringe. The transfer set includes an integral tubular housing having a tubular collar surrounding the rim of the vial, a radial portion sealingly engaging the stopper in the vial, an integral tubular transfer member and an outer tubular portion surrounding at least the distal portion of the tubular transfer member, a piercing member within the tubular transfer member and a closure releasably retaining the distal end of the piercing member.

  1. 1
A combination of a transfer set and a first container (22), for transferring fluids between the first container (22) including an open end, a rim portion (26) surrounding said open end and a pierceable closure (30) in said open end sealing said first container, and a second container, said transfer set comprising:an integral body (140) including a first generally cylindrical tubular portion (146) surrounding said rim portion (26) of said first container and having an open end (146a) secured to said rim portion of said first container, a radial portion (148) integral with said first tubular portion and overlying said pierceable closure (30), a second tubular portion (152) integral with said radial portion (148) and extending generally perpendicular to said radial portion and having an open proximal end overlying said pierceable closure (30) and generally coaxially aligned with said open end of said first container and an open distal end adapted to receive said second container, and a third tubular portion (150) having an open distal end surrounding said distal open end of said second tubular portion and in spaced-apart relation thereto and having a proximal end integrally joined to said second tubular portion (152) and being spaced from said radial portion (148), a piercing element (42) telescopically received in said second tubular portion (152) and having a piercing end (84) adjacent said pierceable closure (30) and moveable within said second tubular portion to pierce said pierceable closure and establish fluid communication between said first and second containers through said second tubular portion;and a removable closure (44) overlying and sealing said distal open end of said third tubular portion (150), characterized in that said transfer set further comprises a plurality of radial web portions (149) integral with a proximal portion (152a) of said second tubular portion (152), an inclined portion (154) and said radial portion (148).
  2. 2
The combination as defined in Claim 1, wherein said distal open end of said second tubular portion (152) includes a Luer connection (51) adapted to threadably receive a Luer connection of said second container.
  3. 3
The combination as defined In Claim 1, wherein said radial portion (148) of said integral body overlies said pierceable closure (30) and said radial portion including a plurality of generally concentric ribs (158a, 158b) surrounding said second tubular portion sealingly engaging said pierceable closure.
  4. 4
The combination as defined in Claim 3, wherein said concentric ribs are circular and coaxially aligned with said second tubular portion (152).
  5. 5
The combination as defined in Claim 3, wherein said concentric ribs have a sharp circular edge biting into said pierceable closure.
  6. 6
The combination as defined in Claim 3, wherein said radial portion (148) includes radial ribs (156) adjacent said first tubular portion (146) engaging said pierceable closure (30) and preventing rotation of said transfer set relative to said first container.
  7. 7
The combination as defined in Claim 1, wherein said open end of said first tubular portion (146) is permanently deformed radially beneath said rim portion (26) of said first container (22), permanently attaching said transfer set to said first container.
  8. 8
The combination as defined in Claim 1, wherein said piercing element (42) includes an elongated body portion releasably contained in said second tubular portion (152) of said body (140) by said closure (44).
  9. 9
The combination as defined in Claim 8, wherein said second tubular portion includes an internal abutment surface (53) and said body portion (140) of said piercing element (42) includes a radial portion (86) preventing withdrawal of said piercing element from said second tubular portion (152).
  10. 10
The combination as defined in Claim 1, wherein said open proximal end of said second tubular portion includes an axially extending barb (158a, 158b) surrounding said open proximal end sealingly engaging said pierceable closure (30) and providing sealed communication between said first container (22) and said second tubular portion (152).
  11. 11
The combination as defined in Claim 1, wherein said second tubular portion (152) of said body is generally cylindrical and said third tubular portion (150) is bell-shaped having a rim portion surrounding said distal open end of said second tubular portion (152) and a proximal end (154) extending generally radially inwardly and integrally joined to a midportion of said second tubular portion.
