  1. 1
A system for information transmission involving one or more remote stations (10) and a vehicle, comprising at least a first remote station (10a) including computer means (60) located at a distance from a vehicle, a wireless device (80) for location in the vehicle for use in sending and receiving information relative to the first remote station over an air link, a plurality of different vehicle devices (50) in the vehicle, each for receiving and/or sending information, controller/network protocol converter means (26, 30) including processing means (90, 94) in the vehicle for controlling the sending and receiving of information using said wireless device (80) between the first remote station (10a) and the vehicle, said controller/network protocol converter means (26, 30) including first standard network communication means for use in presenting information for transmission over the air link in a first format that is acceptable to a first standardized network (68) that includes the air link, and a second standard network communication means (122, 126), different from said first standard network communication means, for communicating with said controller/network protocol converter means (26, 30) and for use in presenting information in a second format that is acceptable to a second standardised network (124), with said second standard network communication means being arranged to communicate with said vehicle devices (50) in order to send and receive information relative thereto and in which said controller/network protocol means (26, 30) is arranged to enable said information to be properly communicated between said first and second standardized networks (68, 124), said system characterized in that :said first standardized network includes the Internet (68) and said controller/ network protocol converter means (26, 30) includes a web server (102) located in the vehicle for responding to a plurality of service related requests, wherein said controller/network protocol converter means is arranged to download executable software from at least the first remote station (10a) for execution as part of responding to an accompanying or future request and said first standard network communications means being arranged to enable said information to be provided to multiple users that utilize different makes of communication equipment, different processing hardware and different applications software executable by said processing means (90, 94) of said controller/network protocol converter means (26, 30).
  2. 2
A system of Claim 1, wherein said controller/network protocol converter means (26, 30) includes a stack (98) associated with Internet protocol (IP) for recognizing source and destination addresses in connection with ensuring receipt of said information at the proper location and for checking accuracy of data packets received from the air link.
  3. 3
A system of Claim 2, wherein a transmission control protocol (TCP) is associated with said stack (98) in operative communication with said web server (102) for regulating flow and structure of said information.
  4. 4
A system of Claim 1, wherein said controller/network protocol converter means (26, 30) includes a data memory (106) for storing generated data useful in handling requests or commands, said data including data obtained from monitoring one or more of said vehicle devices (50) and in which said data is configured in a language for access by said web server (102).
  5. 5
A system of Claim 4, wherein said language includes hypertext mark-up language, HTML.
  6. 6
A system of Claim 4, wherein said data configured in said language is encapsulated by said web server (102) using said first format and said first format includes hypertext transmission protocol, HTTP.
  7. 7
A system of Claim 1, wherein said controller/network protocol converter means (26, 30) includes a real time operating system, RTOS, (94) that manages a number of services associated with conducting one or more applications oriented paths including performing real time multi-tasking.
  8. 8
A system of Claim 7, wherein said controller/network protocol converter means (26, 30) is responsive to more than one request from different users at different remote stations and in which said processor and said RTOS (94) cooperate to perform multiple tasks in a coordinated fashion in response to said request from multiple users.
  9. 9
A system of Claim 1, wherein said web server (102) communicates with a data memory (106) that stores page information, said page information being accessed by said web server and updated with current data from one or more of said vehicle devices (50) and in which said page information can be generated using data already stored in said data memory or using data that is obtained from one or more of said vehicle devices.
  10. 10
A system of Claim 1, wherein said controller/network protocol converter means (26, 30) includes a CGI-bin in communication with said web server (102) and links said web server with a number of executable programs including said downloaded executable software.
  11. 11
A system of Claim 1, wherein said web server (102) operates in accordance with world-wide web protocol.
  12. 12
A system of Claim 1, wherein said second standard network communication means (122, 126) includes a controller area network, CAN, including an object layer, a transfer layer and a physical layer.
