Optimizing implanted medical device performance

Abstract

An apparatus and method for adjusting the performance of an implanted device based on data including contextual information. Contextual information, including operational and performance data concerning the implanted device as well as the patient with the implanted device, is stored by a portable electronic device. In one embodiment, the portable electronic device is adapted for battery operation and includes a personal digital assistant (PDA). The portable electronic device is adapted for use as an interface to conduct wireless communications with the implanted device. In one embodiment, the portable electronic device interfaces with a clinical programmer for use by a physician.

    A system comprising an implantable wireless transmitter coupled to an implantable medical device (25); a portable wireless receiver (135) in communication with the implantable wireless transmitter (115); and a portable device (35) coupled to the portable wireless receiver; characterized in that :the portable device (35) is configured to execute a set of instructions to present a query to a user, to receive a user response to the query and to receive data from the implantable wireless transmitter and correlate the user response with the received data.

    A method comprising the steps of receiving data at a portable device (35), the data received from an implantable device (25); the portable device (35) in wireless communication with the implantable device and in communication with a programmer (45); characterized in that the method further comprises the steps of:receiving a user data input at the portable device (35) in response to a query presented to the user;correlating the data received from the implantable device (25) with the user data input to form contextual information;encoding a message for delivery to the implantable device (25), the message encoded by the programmer (45) as a function of the contextual information;and transferring the encoded message from the programmer (45) to the portable device (35) for wireless delivery from the portable device to the implantable device (25).
