  1. 1
A method of encrypting data on the physical layer of a data transmission system, comprising the steps of - providing a key stream sequence {k n }, - mapping each of a sequence of data blocks on a QAM symbol z n , - altering each of the QAM symbols z n according to an element k n of the key stream sequence {K n }, an thereby creating encrypted symbols v n , characterized in that - the encrypted symbols v n are assigned to N≥ 2 distinct sub-carriers of an Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplex OFDM transmission scheme, - at a transmitter, training OFDM symbols (31) are periodically inserted, altered according to elements of the key stream sequence {k n } and transmitted, - at a receiver, training OFDM symbols (31) are encrypted according to elements of the key stream sequence {k n } and compared to received transmitted encrypted training symbols (31) by a synchronizer/channel estimator (32), and in that - a channel transfer function h n or synchronization information is deduced therefrom
  2. 7
A modem for decrypting, at a receiver, data encrypted on the physical layer of an Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplex OFDM data transmission system, said data being encrypted by altering, at a transmitter, each of a sequence of QAM symbols z n and training OFDM symbols (31) according to an element k n of a key stream sequence {k n } thus creating encrypted symbols v n to be transmitted to the receiver, wherein the encrypted symbols v n are assigned to N≥2 distinct sub-carriers of an Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplex transmission scheme, the modem comprising a synchronizer/channel estimator (32) for comparing the received transmitted encrypted training OFDM symbols (31) with encrypted training OFDM symbols (31) created by altering, at the receiver, training OFDM symbols (31) according to elements of the key stream sequence {k n }, and for deducing a channel transfer function h n or synchronization information therefrom.
