  1. 1
Apparatus (82) for a mobile station (12) of a cellular communication system (10) generally operable pursuant to a cdma 2000 operating specification and that provides for variable data rate communications, the communication system defining a reverse fundamental pilot channel (22) upon which the mobile station (12) communicates a reverse fundamental pilot signal to facilitate demodulation of the first data communicated upon a reverse fundamental data channel (14), said apparatus being adapted for facilitating demodulation of second data communicated upon a reverse supplemental data channel (16) and comprising:a reverse supplemental pilot signal generator (84) embodied at the mobile station, said reverse supplemental pilot signal generator for generating a reverse supplemental pilot signal upon a reverse supplemental pilot channel (24), the reverse supplemental pilot signal targeted at a supplemental channel target power level, said supplemental channel target power level being selected responsive to a data rate of the second data.
  2. 2
A method for facilitating detection of data received at a receiving station (34) from a mobile station (12), the method comprising the steps of:determining a rate at which data is to be transmitted on a reverse supplemental channel (16) of a radio communication channel;determining a target power level of a pilot signal required by the receiving station to estimate values of bits of said data transmitted at said data rate on said reverse supplemental channel;sending a supplemental pilot signal having said target power level on a reverse supplemental pilot channel (24);and repeating the foregoing steps when the rate at which data is to be transmitted on said reverse supplemental channel changes.
