System and method for discovery of BGP router topology

Abstract

A system and method for discovering a routing topology within a domain of interest are disclosed. In accordance with certain embodiments, a Border Gateway Protocol ("BGP") discovery engine 301 is provided that enables auto-discovery of BGP routers in a specified domain of interest. For instance, such a BGP discovery engine may receive 501, as input, an identification of a domain of interest and a "seed" BGP router within such domain of interest, and may recursively query 503, 508 the BGP routers identified within the domain of interest for information to compile 505, 510 the topology of such BGP routers in such domain of interest.
