  1. 1
A method for transmission and reception of data between a multimedia card (200) and a host controller (220) for controlling the multimedia card (200), the method comprising the step of:transferring data between a multimedia card (200) comprising: at least first through seventh terminals being respectively a single-ended data bus channel (DAT), a negative supply terminal (V SS2 ), a clock terminal (CLK), a positive supply terminal (V DD ), a second negative supply terminal (V SS ), a command terminal (CMD) and a reserved terminal (10);and a host controller (220) using the single-ended data bus channel (DAT);characterised by : a first step of determining whether the host controller (220) is a host controller (220) for a high-speed multimedia card (200);a second step of determining whether the multimedia card (200) is a high-speed multimedia card (200);a third step of transferring the data using a differential data bus channel (VDAT) configured on the reserved terminal (10) and a newly added terminal (9) of the multimedia card (200) if the host controller (220) is a host controller (220) for a high-speed multimedia card (200) and the multimedia card (200) is a high-speed multimedia card (200) thereby enhancing the transfer rate of the multimedia card (200);and a fourth step of transferring the data using the single-ended data bus channel (DAT) if the host controller (220) is not a host controller (220) for a high-speed multimedia card (200), or if the multimedia card (200) is not a high-speed multimedia card (200).
  2. 5
The method as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the first step comprises a step of making a determination through a mode command that the host controller (220) sends to the multimedia card (200) a request for card specific data.
  3. 7
The method as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the second step comprises a step of making determination through the contents of a card specific data register that the multimedia card (200) sends in response to a request received from the host controller (220).
  4. 9
A host controller for controlling a multimedia card (200) in a system including the multimedia card (200) and the host controller (220) to transmit and receive data therebetween, wherein:the multimedia card comprises at least first through seventh terminals being a single-ended data bus channel (DAT), a negative supply terminal (V SS2 ), a clock terminal (CLK), a positive supply terminal (V DD ), a second negative supply terminal (V SS ), a command terminal (CMD) and a reserved terminal (10) respectively;characterised in that : the multimedia card (200) comprises a differential data channel (VDAT) capable of transferring a differential signal using the reserved terminal (10) and a newly added terminal (9), and the host controller (220) comprises a data channel selection unit (221) arranged to select between using the differential data channel (VDAT) and the single-ended data bus channel (DAT).
  5. 13
A multimedia card for use in a system including the multimedia card (200) and a host controller (220) for controlling the multimedia card (200) to transmit and receive data therebetween, wherein:the multimedia card comprises first through seventh terminals being a single-ended data bus channel (DAT), a negative supply terminal (V SS2 ), a clock terminal (CLK), a positive supply terminal (V DD ), a second negative supply terminal (V SS ), a command terminal (CMD) and a reserved terminal (10) respectively;characterised in that : the multimedia card (200) comprises a differential data bus channel (VDAT) capable of transferring a differential signal using the reserved terminal (10) and a newly added terminal (9), and the host controller (220) comprises a data channel selection unit (221) arranged to select between using the differential data bus channel (VDAT) and the single-ended data bus channel (DAT).
  6. 16
The multimedia card as claimed in any of claims 13 to 15, wherein the multimedia card (200) sends the contents of a card specific data register in response to a request from the host controller (220), and information indicating a high-speed multimedia card (200) is included in reserved bits of the card specific data register.
