Packer retriever

Abstract

A packer retriever having a grapple body rotatably and slideably coupled to a mandrel directly attached to a milling tool can engage a packer (or extension thereof) having a substantially smooth I.D. in a wellbore while the packer is milled. The mandrel rotates in a central opening through the grapple body. The grapple body does not rotate when released from teeth of a nut on the mandrel and can remain engaged to the packer (or the extension) as milling proceeds. The mandrel includes a specially designed shoulder and the grapple body includes a specially designed bearing, both casehardened, which allow the mandrel to rotate constantly while reducing the effects of wear. The packer retriever remains in the engaged position to prevent the packer from falling if it breaks loose while milling. The packer retriever can transfer torque to the packer and can be engaged and released multiple times.

12 claims: 8 independent, 4 dependent

  1. 1
A packer retriever (100) adapted to be used with a milling tool in a wellbore, the packer retriever (100) comprising:a grapple (106) comprising a partial cylinder with a longitudinal opening (130) therein, and having external teeth (132) for engaging inside a bore (142a) of a packer (142);a grapple carrier (104) that carries the grapple (106) and has a central opening (128);a mandrel (102) having a smooth external surface (118) adapted to extend through the central opening (128) of the grapple carrier (106) to permit rotation and/or vertical movement of the mandrel (102) relative to the grapple (106) while the external teeth (132) of the grapple (106) are engaged inside the bore (142a) of the packer (142);the grapple (106) being adapted to allow entry into and positioning thereof in the bore (142a) of the packer (142) upon application of a downward force on the grapple carrier (104), wherein when so positioned the grapple (106) is arranged to support and prevent said packer (142) from falling while the packer (142) is being milled, the grapple (106) having a keyway (126) and the grapple carrier (104) having a key (110) positioned in the keyway (126) such that upon the application of an upward force and rotation of the mandrel (102) in a first direction relative to the grapple (106), the key (110) is arranged to transfer torque to the grapple (106) to cause narrowing of the longitudinal opening (130) and thereby compression of the grapple (106) for releasing the external teeth (132) from engagement with the bore (142a) of the packer (142).
  2. 4
A packer retriever (100) according to any of claims 1 to 3, comprising a milling tool (140) mounted with the mandrel (102) for rotation and downward movement, the milling tool (140) moving downwardly together with the grapple carrier (104) for milling the packer (142) while the grapple (106) remains engaged with the packer (142) to prevent the packer (142) from falling during milling.
  3. 5
A packer retriever (100) according to any of claims 1 to 4, comprising a nut (134) on the mandrel below the grapple carrier (104), the nut (134) being adapted to engage the grapple carrier (104) upon upward movement and rotation of the mandrel (102) for effecting a release of the external teeth (132) of the grapple (106) from the bore (142a) of the packer (142).
  4. 6
A method of retrieving a packer (142) having a packer bore (142a) from a wellbore using a packer retriever (100) having a milling tool (140), a mandrel (102) with a shoulder (116), a grapple (106) comprising a partial cylinder with a longitudinal opening (130) therein and a grapple carrier (104), the grapple (106) having a keyway (126) and the grapple carrier (104) having a key (110) positioned in the keyway (126), the method comprising:lowering the packer retriever (100) into a wellbore having a packer held therein;engaging the bore (142a) of the packer (142) with the grapple (106) upon application of a downward force on the grapple carrier (104), the grapple (106) having external teeth (132) that engage inside the bore (142a) of the packer (142), the grapple (106) supporting and preventing said packer (142) from falling while the packer (142) is being milled;milling the packer (142) while the grapple (106) engages the packer bore (142a) without rotation;and, applying an upward force and rotation of the mandrel (102) in a first direction relative to the grapple (106) such that the key (110) transfers torque to the grapple (106), causing narrowing of the longitudinal opening (130) and thereby compression of the grapple (106) for releasing the external teeth (132) from engagement with the bore (142a) of the packer (142).
  5. 9
A method according to any of claims 6 to 8, comprising engaging the bore (142a) of the packer (142) with the grapple (106) and releasing the grapple (106) from the bore (142a) of the packer (142) multiple times.
  6. 10
A method according to any of claims 6 to 9, wherein milling the packer (140) comprises milling the packer (140) along a circumference of the packer (140).
  7. 11
A method according to any of claims 6 to 10, comprising rotating a portion of the mandrel (102) on a bearing (108) of the grapple carrier (104) while the grapple (106) remains stationary during the milling.
  8. 12
A method according to any of claims 6 to 11, comprising pulling up on the packer retriever (100) for further engaging the grapple (106) to the bore (142a) of the packer (142).
