Device for improving a user's breathing

Abstract

In one embodiment, a device for improving a user's breathing includes an upper arch adapted to receive at least some of the user's upper teeth and a lower arch adapted to receive at least some of the user's lower teeth. A hook having an end is coupled to the upper arch. The lower arch includes a recess adapted to receive and position the end of the hook to pull the lower arch forward to facilitate improved breathing.

  1. 1
A device for improving a user's breathing, comprising:- an upper arch (10) adapted to receive at least some of the user's upper teeth;- a hook (60) coupled to the upper arch (10), the hook (60) comprising a substantially rounded end (62);- and a lower arch (20) adapted to receive at least some of the user's lower teeth, the lower arch (20) comprising a substantially rounded recess (52) adapted to receive and position the substantially rounded end (62) of the hook (60) to pull the lower arch (20) forward to facilitate improved breathing, characterized in that the substantially rounded end (62) of the hook (60) is substantially spherical.
  2. 4
Device of any one of claims 1-3, wherein the hook (60) comprises an arm (61) having a length that determines an opening of the user's lower jaw ;and the hook (60) is selected from among multiple hooks having different arm lengths.
  3. 5
Device of any one of claims 1-4, further comprising:an upper platform (40) coupled to the upper arch (10), the upper platform (40) comprising a slot (42) adapted to receive and engage a flange (64) of the hook (60), the slot (42) further adapted to permit forward and rearward travel of the hook (60) within the slot (42) and to substantially prevent lateral and vertical movement of the hook (60) relative to the upper platform (40);and a threaded adjustor (44) disposed in a first channel (43) formed in the upper platform (40), the adjustor (44) adapted to engage a second threaded channel (66) formed in the hook (60) such that rotation of the adjustor (44) causes the hook (60) to travel forwardly or rearwardly within the slot (42).
  4. 8
Device of any one of claims 5-7, wherein the upper arch (10) comprises a slot adapted to receive and engage the upper platform (40) such that the slot and upper platform (40) cooperate to substantially prevent movement of the upper platform (40) within the slot of the upper arch (10).
  5. 9
Device of any one of claims 5-8, further comprising one or more stops (70a, 70b) positioned in the upper platform (40) and extending into a recess (68) formed in the hook (60), the stops (70a. 70b) adapted to limit travel of the hook (60) within the slot (42), an end of the recess (68) formed in the hook (60) contacting a stop (70a, 70b) preventing further travel of the hook (60a, 60b) within the slot (42) in a corresponding direction.
  6. 11
Device of any one of claims 1-10, further comprising a lower platform (50) coupled to the lower arch (20), the lower platform (50) comprising the substantially rounded recess (52) and a flat arched anterior portion that is forward of the substantially rounded recess (52) and is adapted to seat on the user's lower anterior teeth.
  7. 12
Method of fitting a device according to any one of claims 1-11 to a user, the device adapted for improving the user's breathing, comprising the following steps:- inserting an upper arch (10) into the user's mouth, the upper arch (10) adapted to receive at least some of the user's upper teeth, the upper arch (10) coupled to a hook (60) comprising a substantially rounded end (62), wherein the substantially rounded end (62) of the hook is substantially spherical;- inserting a lower arch (20) into the user's mouth, the lower arch (20) adapted to receive at least some of the user's lower teeth, the lower arch comprising a substantially rounded recess (52) adapted to receive and position the substantially rounded end (62) of the hook (60) to pull the lower arch (20) forward to facilitate improved breathing;- positioning the substantially rounded end (62) of the hook (60) in the substantially rounded recess (52) of the lower arch (20);and - adjusting the hook (60) while the upper and lower arches (10, 20) are in the user's mouth to pull the lower arch (20) forward to facilitate improved breathing.
  8. 15
Method of any one of claims 12-14, wherein the hook (60) comprises an arm (61) having a length that determines an opening of the user's lowor jaw ;and the hook (60) is selected from among multiple hooks having different arm lengths.
  9. 16
Method of any one of claims 12-15, wherein the upper arch (10) is coupled to an upper platform (40) comprising a slot (42) adapted to receive and engage a flange (64) of the hook (60), the slot (42) further adapted to permit forward and rearward travel of the hook (60) within the slot (42) and to substantially prevent lateral and vertical movement of the hook (60) relative to the upper platform (40);and the method further comprises rotating a threaded adjustor (44) disposed in a first channel (43) formed in the upper platform (40), the adjustor (44) adapted to engage a second threaded channel (66) formed in the hook (60) such that rotation of the adjustor (44) causes the hook (60) to travel forwardly or rearwardly within the slot (42).
