Wireless communication system, wireless communication unit and method for reducing the impact of jamming interference

Abstract

A wireless communication system (200) comprises at least one wireless serving communication unit (222), e.g. base transceiver or transceiver station, serving a plurality of remote units (212-216) with a communication resource (218-220). The at least one wireless serving communication unit (222) detects non-availability of an one or more inbound communication resource(s) owing to interference or jamming and transmits a broadcast message on an outbound communication resource indicating a non-availability of the one or more inbound communication resource(s). A communication unit and method of communication are also provided. Thus, by using a broadcast message of an uplink channel's non-availability, the impact of a third party transmitting a jamming /interfering signal to interfere with inbound signals to the serving unit is reduced.

  1. 1
A wireless communication system (200) comprising at least one wireless serving communication unit (222) serving a plurality of remote units (212-216) with a communication resource (218-220), the at least one wireless serving communication unit (222) comprising a transmitter for transmitting a communication signal to at least one of the plurality of remote units (212-216) on an outbound communication resource, and a receiver for receiving a communication signal from the at least one of the plurality of remote units (212-216) on an inbound communication resource, wherein the at least one wireless serving communication unit (222) is operable to transmit a broadcast message on an outbound communication resource indicating a non-availability of one or more inbound communication resource(s), characterised in that the broadcast message indicating a non-availability of one or more inbound communication resource(s) is initiated in response to a detected interference/ jamming of the inbound communication resource.
  2. 4
A system (200) according to any one preceding Claim, wherein the wireless communication system (200) is further characterised in that the broadcast message being a low-level protocol message, for example a medium access control message.
  3. 5
A system (200) according to any one preceding Claim, wherein the at least one wireless serving communication unit (222) is operable to continue to transmit the broadcast message periodically or intermittently on a broadcast channel or on a specific channel to a broadcast address on a specific channel, to be received and processed by a number of receiving units located on that specific channel.
  4. 6
A wireless communication system (200) according to any one preceding Claim, wherein the wireless communication system (200) is a TETRA wireless communication system.
  5. 7
A wireless communication unit (222-232, 212-216) adapted to operate in the wireless communication system (200) of any of the preceding Claims.
  6. 10
A method of communicating in a wireless communication system (200) having at least one wireless serving communication unit (222) serving a plurality of remote units (212-216) with a communication resource, the method characterised by the steps of:identifying a non-availability of one or more inbound communication resource(s) by detecting a jamming or interference signal associated with the uplink communication resource;and in response transmitting a broadcast message to a number of the remote units (212-216) on an outbound communication resource indicating the non-availability.
  7. 13
A method according to any one of preceding Claims 10 to 12, wherein the step of transmitting a broadcast message comprises transmitting the broadcast message periodically or intermittently on a broadcast channel.
  8. 14
A method according to any one of preceding Claims 10 to 13, wherein the wireless communication system (300) is a wireless communication system operating according to TETRA standard procedures.
