13 claims: 3 independent, 10 dependent

  1. 1
A method of transferring data via a switch fabric (712), comprising:for each unit of data to be transferred, selecting one of a plurality of links (708) from a fabric access node (700, 702, 704, 706) to the switch fabric (712) to transfer the unit of data;receiving, at a fabric access circuit (700, 702, 704, 710), in a unit of data received on an egress link a control information provided by the switch fabric (712) indicating that the switch fabric (712) has detected a problem associated with an ingress link with which the egress link is associated;and transferring a subsequently received unit of data via one of the remaining links;wherein the switch fabric (712) is configured to detect a problem with the ingress link, include the control information in the unit of data, and send the unit of data via the egress link.
  2. 2
A method of transferring data via a switch fabric (712) as recited in Claim 1, wherein the data includes a plurality of cells.
  3. 3
A method of transferring data via a switch fabric (712) as recited in Claim 1, wherein the data includes a plurality of non-striped cells.
  4. 4
A method of transferring data via a switch fabric (712) as recited in Claim 1, wherein the switch fabric (712) includes a plurality of switch planes (714, 716, 718)
  5. 5
A method of transferring data via a switch fabric (712) as recited in Claim 1, wherein said egress link and said ingress link with which the egress link is associated are a part of a bi-directional connection.
  6. 6
A method of transferring data via a switch fabric (712) as recited in Claim 1, wherein said control information comprises a synchronization flag indicating that said ingress link with which the egress link is associated has failed.
  7. 7
A method of transferring data via a switch fabric (712) as recited in Claim 1, wherein said control information consists in an error in said unit of data which is detected.
  8. 8
A method of transferring data via a switch fabric (712) as recited in Claim 7, wherein said error is detected by performing a cyclic redundancy check on the said unit of data.
  9. 9
A method of transferring data via a switch fabric (712) as recited in Claim 1, wherein said control information consists in backpressure information on said egress link.
  10. 10
A method of transferring data via a switch fabric (712) as recited in Claim 1, in the event that one or more of the plurality of links is unavailable, further comprising stopping sending data to the one or more unavailable link.
  11. 11
A method of transferring data via a switch fabric (712) as recited in Claim 1, wherein each of the plurality of links connect between a fabric access node (700, 702, 704, 706) and the switch fabric (712).
  12. 12
A network fabric access device, comprising:a plurality of links (708) coupled to a switch fabric (712);and a fabric access circuit (700, 702, 704, 710) configured to: for each unit of data to be transferred, select one of the plurality of links (708) to transfer the unit of data;receive in a unit of data received on an egress link a control information provided by the switch fabric (712) indicating that the switch fabric (712) has detected a problem associated with an ingress link with which the egress link is associated;and transfer a subsequently received unit of data via one of the remaining links;wherein the switch fabric (712) is configured to detect a problem with the ingress link, include the control information in the unit of data, and send the unit of data via the egress link.
  13. 13
A computer program product for transferring data via a switch fabric (712), the computer program product being embodied in a computer readable medium and comprising computer instructions for:for each unit data to be transferred, selecting one of a plurality of links (708) from a fabric access node (700, 702, 704, 706) to the switch fabric (712) to transfer the unit data;receiving in a unit of data received on an egress link a control information provided by the switch fabric (712) indicating that the switch fabric (712) has detected a problem associated with an ingress link with which the egress link is associated;and transferring a subsequently received unit of data via one of the remaining links;wherein the switch fabric (712) being configured to detect a problem with the ingress link, include the control information in the unit of data, and send the unit of data via the egress link.
