11 claims: 5 independent, 6 dependent

  1. 1
An apparatus for inspecting a structure comprising:a driven probe (14) disposed proximate a first surface (12a) of the structure (12), said driven probe (14) comprising a magnet (18);and a tracking probe (16) disposed proximate an opposed second surface (12b) of the structure (12), said tracking probe (16) also comprising a magnet (18) for cooperating with the magnet (18) of said driven probe (14) to draw the driven and tracking probes (14, 16) toward the first and second surfaces (12a, 12b) of the structure (12), respectively, wherein magnetic attraction between said driven and tracking probes (14, 16) causes said tracking probe (16) to be moved over the second surface (12b) of the structure (12) in response to corresponding movement of said driven probe (14), and wherein said driven probe (14) and said tracking probe (16) further comprise a sensing element (20) for inspecting the structure (12) as said driven probe (14) is moved over the first surface (12a) of the structure (12), wherein said driven and tracking probe (14, 16) each comprise an array of magnets (18) and/or ferromagnetic elements, wherein the polarity of at least one element of each array is different from that of the other elements to thereby serve as a magnetic key, wherein the sensing elements (20) are ultrasonic transducers and comprise arrays of ultrasonic transducers, wherein said driven probe (14) further comprises an inlet (22) for liquid that is bubbled between the ultrasonic transducer and the first surface (12a) of the structure (12).
  2. 7
An apparatus according to any of Claims 1-6 wherein said driven probe (14) comprises at least one contact member (28) for contacting the first surface (12a) of the structure (12) such that said driven probe (14) is capable of riding therealong.
  3. 9
An apparatus according to any of Claims 1-8 wherein said tracking probe (16) comprises at least one contact member (28) for contacting the second surface (12b) of the structure (12) such that said tracking probe (16) is capable of riding therealong.
  4. 10
An apparatus according to any of Claims 1-9 wherein the sensing element (20) is selected from the group consisting of an x-ray detector and a camera.
  5. 11
A method of inspecting a structure comprising:positioning a driven probe (14) proximate a first surface (12a) of the structure (12) and a tracking probe (16) proximate an opposed second surface (12b) of the structure (12);establishing magnetic attraction between the driven and tracking probes (14, 16) such that the driven and tracking probes (14, 16) are drawn toward the first and second surfaces (12a, 12b) of the structure (12), respectively;moving the driven probe (14) along the first surface (12a) of the structure (12) which causes the tracking probe (16) to be correspondingly moved along the second surface (12b) of the structure (12);and transmitting ultrasonic signals into and receiving ultrasonic signals from the structure (12) as the driven probe (14) is moved along the first surface (12a) of the structure (12), wherein the driven probe (14) moves along the first surface (12a) of the structure (12) in response to the application of motive force, and wherein the tracking probe (16) moves along the second surface (12b) of the structure (12) in response to movement of the driven probe (14) along the first surface (12a) of the structure (12) and independent of the application of any other motive force, using an apparatus according to any of Claims 1-10.
