Improved method of changing tread on very large tires

Abstract

A method of changing or placing a tread belt (12, 512b) onto a two piece tire carcass (14, 514) is described. The method involves jacking the vehicle (600) up so the wheel clears the ground deflating the carcass (14, 514) and pulling a vacuum to partially collapse the carcass (14, 514), placing the tread belt (12, 512b) about half way onto the carcass (14, 514) to support the tread belt weight lifting or pushing the tread belt (12, 512b) the remainder of the way onto the carcass (14, 514) and inflating the carcass (14, 514).

10 claims: 6 independent, 4 dependent

  1. 1
A method of forming a two-piece tire assembly by mounting a large tread belt (12, 512b) onto a tire carcass (14, 514) when the carcass is mounted on a rim (42) on a vehicle (600);the method comprising the steps of jacking the vehicle wheel position up;pulling a vacuum partially collapsing the carcass (14, 514);placing a vertical upper radially inner portion of the tread belt (12, 512b) onto a top surface of the carcass (14, 514) about one-half way or more across the axial width of the carcass thereby supporting the tread belt weight;lifting or pushing the rest of the tread belt axially over the carcass a predetermined distance inflating the carcass to a predetermined press to form the two piece tire assembly while mounted on the vehicle (600).
  2. 4
The method of at least one of the previous claims, further comprises the steps of holding or restraining the tread belt using a pair of support arms inserted not the full width of the belt;moving the tread belt laterally over the carcass past the support arms.
  3. 5
The method of at least one of the previous claims, wherein the step of holding includes the step of tilting the tread belt on the support arms whereby the weight of the tread belt moves the lower portion at least partially over the carcass.
  4. 6
A large tire rim characterized by a cylindrical rim base (32);an annular removable rim flange (35);an annular bead seat band (33);an annular locking ring (34);an annular flange seal;and a flange clamping means (36), wherein the clamping means (36) has three inner first block portions (37) and an outer secondary ring portion (38), the inner first block portions interlock with the bead seat band (33) and abut a portion of the outer secondary ring portion (38), the outer secondary ring portion (38) presses against the inner first block portion (37) and the cylindrical rim base (32);and threaded fasteners (39) are inserted through the outer secondary ring portion (38) and are threaded into each of the inner first block portions (37) and pulls the annular bead seat band (33) firmly against the annular locking ring (34).
  5. 7
A tire handling and tread belt manipulator mechanism comprising a pair of movable manipulator arms (531);a pair of tire grippers (532) attached to the ends of the manipulator arms (531);a pair of tread belt support arms (533), one being attached above the tire grippers (532) on each manipulator arm (531);and a hydraulic means to move the manipulator arms (531).
  6. 10
The tire handling and tread belt manipulator mechanism of at least of claims 7 through 9, wherein each tread belt support arm (533) has one or more telescoping slidable extension sections
