Wall-flow redistributor for packed columns

Abstract

A wall-flow distributor for an exchange column containing structured packing comprises a wall-flow collector (12) located above a layer of structured packing to collect at least a portion of the liquid descending on or near the column wall; transmission means (14) for transmitting at least a portion of the collected liquid collected by the wall-flow collector (12) toward the column longitudinal axis; and dispensing means (16) for dispensing collected liquid from the transmission means to the lower layer at a distance substantially spaced from said wall.

  1. 1
A wall-flow redistributor for collecting and redistributing a flow of a liquid descending in an exchange column containing at least a "first" layer (42') of structured packing, comprising:a wall-flow collector (12, 12') disposed in the column above said first layer (42') and having an outer perimeter adjacent the inner perimeter of the column wall to collect at least a portion of the liquid descending on or near the column wall (24);transmission means (14) disposed in the column for transmitting at least a portion of the liquid collected by the wall-flow collector (12, 12') toward the column longitudinal axis a substantial distance across the cross-sectional area of the column;and dispensing means (16) for dispensing, from the transmission means to said first layer (42') at said distance, at least a portion of the collected liquid.
  2. 4
A wall-flow redistributor as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the height of the redistributor is at most 100 mm.
  3. 5
A wall-flow redistributor as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the wall-flow collector comprises an annular channel member (12) extending within the periphery of the channel wall (24).
  4. 8
A wall-flow redistributor as claimed in any one of Claims 1 to 4, wherein the wall-flow collector comprises an annular angle member (12') extending within the periphery of the channel wall (24).
  5. 11
A wall-flow redistributor as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the wall-flow collector (12) is fixedly attached to the column wall (24).
  6. 12
A wall-flow redistributor as claimed in any one of Claims 1 to 10, wherein the wall-flow collector (12') is moveable in a vertical direction along the longitudinal axis within the column.
  7. 13
A wall-flow redistributor as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein:the transmission means comprises at least one trough (14) in fluid communication with the wall-flow collector (12, 12') and extending across at least a portion of the cross-sectional area of the column, and the dispensing means comprises at least one aperture or overflow notch (16) in each trough (14).
  8. 16
A wall-flow redistributor as claimed in any one of Claims 13 to 15, wherein the wall-flow collector further comprises at least one wiper (38, 38') adjacent the column wall (24) or the exterior surface of the structured packing, the wiper (38, 38') being located above the trough (14) to transfer at least a portion of the liquid descending on or near the column wall (24) into the trough (14).
  9. 17
A wall-flow redistributor as claimed in any one of Claims 1 to 12, wherein    the transmission means comprises a plate (62) having at least a portion thereof in fluid communication with the wall-flow collector (12, 12') and extending across at least a portion of the cross-sectional area of the column, and    the dispensing means comprises at least one aperture (16) in the plate (62).
  10. 20
A wall-flow redistributor as claimed in any one of the preceding Claims, wherein    the wall-flow collector (12, 12') is disposed in the column above said first layer (42') and below a second layer (42) of structured packing;and    the transmission means comprises at least one member (22) disposed in the column between said first layer (42') and said second layer (42) to support at least a portion of said second layer (42).
  11. 25
A wall-flow redistributor as claimed in any one of Claims 22 to 24, wherein:the wall-flow collector (12, 12') is fixedly attached to the column wall (24);the dispensing means comprises at least one aperture in the floor of each said channel for dispensing collected liquid from the channel to said first layer (42');and the wall-flow collector comprises at least one wiper (38) adjacent the column wall (24) or the exterior surface of the structured packing, located above the beam (22) to transfer at least a portion of the liquid descending on or near the column wall (24) into said channel.
  12. 26
A wall-flow redistributor as claimed in any one of Claims 22 to 24, wherein:the wall-flow collector (12, 12') is movable in a vertical direction along the column longitudinal axis within the column;the dispensing means comprises at least one aperture (16) in the floor of each said channel for dispensing collected liquid from said channel to said first layer (42');and the transmission means comprises at least one wiper adjacent the column wall (24) or the exterior surface of the structured packing, located above the beam to transfer at least a portion of the liquid descending on or near the channel wall (24) into said channel.
  13. 27
