4 claims: 2 independent, 2 dependent

  1. 1
A phase control dimmer circuit (1) for controlling a magnetically saturable inductive load (60), the phase control dimmer circuit (1) comprising a first switch (20), a second switch (50) and a protection circuit, the first switch in use determining a conduction angle of the second switch, and the second switch, in series with the inductive load, effecting conduction of the inductive load in response to the first switch, the protection circuit characterised in comprising:an imbalance detector (Q200, Q201, Q202, Q203, C200, C201, C202, C203, C204, R200, R201, R202, R203, R204, R205, R206, R207, R208, D202, D203) for detecting an asymmetrical operation in the inductive load by detecting a difference between a conduction period of consecutive positive and negative half cycles and registering a load imbalance if the difference between the consecutive positive and negative half cycles exceeds a preset threshold;and a circuit control means (Q204, R209, R210, Q205, R211, R212) for protecting the phase control dimmer circuit by causing the phase control dimmer circuit to shut down upon detection of the asymmetrical operation.
  2. 2
A phase control dimmer circuit (1) that controls a magnetically saturable inductive load (60), the phase control dimmer circuit comprising a first switch (20),a second switch (50) and a load imbalance detector, the first switch in use determining a firing angle of the second switch, and the second switch, in series with the inductive load, effecting conduction of the inductive load in response to the first switch, the load imbalance detector characterised in comprising:a load DC component detector (R43, R44, R29, R45, R46, R30, C12) to detect a DC component in the inductive load by detecting a DC component across the phase control dimmer circuit wherein said load DC component detector detects a DC sub-component in a positive cycle and detects a DC sub-component in a negative cycle and wherein said magnitude of the DC component is the difference between the respective DC sub-components;a comparator (C12, Q9, Q10) for comparing a magnitude of the DC component detected by the load DC component detector with a reference voltage;and a signal generating means (Q11, Q20, R32, R34, Q21, "sync", Q12) for protecting the dimmer circuit by generating a circuit shut-down signal if the DC component exceeds a pre-set DC voltage threshold above the reference voltage.
