42 claims: 1 independent, 41 dependent

  1. 1
A method of displaying objects in a user interface for a computer, the method comprising the steps of:displaying objects (42-50) in a layered view where at least one object (44) can overlay another object (46) and obscure at least a portion of the other object;and switching (92) to an unlayered view in response to a first command (60), wherein a predetermined set of said objects are displayed without overlap;characterized by returning to the layered view in response to a user selecting one of said objects in said predetermined set of objects, with said selected object becoming the active object in the layered view;said switching comprising a determination of a scale amount and a non-overlapping position for each object in said predetermined set of objects;and the objects in said predetermined set are each scaled by the same amount and moved to their determined positions while switching to said unlayered view to thereby maintain their relative sizes and aspect ratios in said unlayered view.
  2. 6
The method according to one of claims 1 to 5, wherein the switching step further includes a step of resizing the objects so that all of the objects of at least a group of objects appear within a defined boundary area of the display in the unlayered view.
  3. 8
The method according to one of claims 1 to 7, wherein the objects comprise a set of windows.
  4. 11
The method according to one of claims 8 to 10, further including a step of moving all windows out of an area of the display in response to a second command to present a desktop view.
  5. 12
The method according to one of claims 1 to 11, wherein the objects include icons.
  6. 13
The method according to one of claims 1 to 12, wherein the objects include images.
  7. 14
The method according to one of claims 1 to 13, wherein the set comprises a subset of all objects on the display which are related to one another.
  8. 19
The method according to one of claims 16 to 18, wherein the repositioning step includes the steps of:establishing a vector that indicates relative positions of two overlapping objects, and determining directions of movement for the overlapping objects in accordance with the vector.
  9. 23
The method according to one of claims 20 to 22, further including a step of computing an external force factor to maintain the objects within a boundary area, and adding the force factor to the movement amounts.
  10. 24
The method according to one of claims 20 to 23, further including steps of determining whether the objects lie outside of a defined boundary area after a last iteration, and resizing the objects to fit within the boundary area if they lie outside of the boundary area.
  11. 26
The method according to one of claims 1 to 25, wherein the command is issued by a program.
  12. 28
The method according to one of claims 1 to 27, comprising the steps of:displaying one or more windows in a first view such that the windows can obscure a user's view of objects on the desktop of the user interface;temporarily removing the windows from their obscuring positions in a second view, in response to a first user command;returning the windows to their original positions of the first view, in response to a second command from the user;selecting an object in one of the windows or from the desktop while one of the first or second views, respectively, is being displayed;and placing the selected object on the desktop or in one of the windows, respectively, after switching to the other of the first or second views,
  13. 31
The method according to one of claims 1 to 30, comprising the steps of:displaying a plurality of windows that are respectively associated with different applications running on the computer;in response to a command to present an alternative view, repositioning those windows associated with one of the applications so that they appear in a respective area of the display without overlap in the foreground;and subsequently returning the windows to their original positions in response to a user action.
  14. 34
The method according to one of claims 31 to 33, further including the steps, in response to another user action during the time that the windows associated with the one application are repositioned, of:repositioning those windows associated with a second application so that they appear in a respective area of the display without overlap in the foreground;and dimming the windows associated with the one application.
  15. 35
A graphical user interface system for a computer, wherein the graphical user interface system is in particular adapted to perform the method according to one of claims 1 to 34.
  16. 38
The system according to one of claims 35 to 37, wherein the objects comprise a combination of windows and other user interface elements.
  17. 39
A computer-readable medium containing a computer program that is adapted to cause a computer system to perform the method according to one of claims 1 to 34.
