Label switching in fibre channel networks

Abstract

Methods and apparatus are provided for label switched routing in fiber channel networks. Techniques are provided for implementing label switching based on particular characteristics of fiber channel networks. By using label switching, mechanisms such as traffic engineering, security, and tunneling through networks that do not support fiber channel frames can be implemented.

19 claims: 5 independent, 14 dependent

  1. 1
A method for routing fibre channel frames (213) in a fibre channel fabric, the method comprising:receiving a fibre channel frame (541) at a gateway (657) between a first network supporting fibre channel and a second network (655) not supporting fibre channel, the fibre channel frame having a first stack of labels (207), wherein a control word in the fibre channel frame is used to place the fibre channel frame in order in a sequence of fibre channel frames and wherein the fibre channel frame is received from the second network (655);referencing an entry in a label information base (545) at the gateway based on the stack of incoming labels;removing the first stack of labels from the fibre channel frame (549);and forwarding the fibre channel frame in order in the sequence of fibre channel frames based on the control word.
  2. 3
The method of any of claims 1-2, further comprising:inserting a second set of labels into the fibre channel frame.
  3. 6
The method of any of claims 1-5, wherein the stack of labels (207) comprises of one or more labels.
  4. 8
The method of any of claims 1-7, wherein the first label stack is included in the EISL header.
  5. 9
The method of any of claims 1-7, wherein the first label stack is included in the fibre channel frame header.
  6. 10
An apparatus for routing fibre channel frames (213) in a fibre channel fabric, the apparatus comprising a gateway (657) between a first network supporting fibre channel and a second network (655) not supporting fibre channel, the gateway comprising:means for receiving a fibre channel frame (541), the fibre channel frame having a first stack of labels (207), wherein a control word in the fibre channel frame is used to order the fibre channel frame in a sequence of fibre channel frames received at the gateway;means for referencing an entry in a label information base (545) based on the stack of incoming labels;means for removing the first stack of labels from the fibre channel frame (549);and means for forwarding the fibre channel frame in order in the sequence of fibre channel frames based on the control word.
  7. 11
Apparatus according to Claim 10 further comprising means for implementing the method according to any of Claims 2 to 9.
  8. 12
A method for tunneling fibre channel frames, the method comprising:receiving a fibre channel frame at a gateway (653) between a first network supporting fibre channel and a second network not supporting fibre channel;identifying an incoming label (665) associated with the fibre channel frame, the incoming label (665) determined using fibre channel routing mechanisms;swapping the incoming label associated with the fibre channel frame with an outgoing label (673), the outgoing label determined by referencing an entry in the label information base associated with the gateway (653);inserting additional labels (675) to the fibre channel frame, wherein the additional labels are determined using non-fibre channel routing mechanisms, the additional labels used to forward the frame in the second network;adding a control word (671) to the fibre channel frame to enable the fibre channel frame to be reordered in a sequence of fibre channel frames;and transmitting the fibre channel frame (653) over the second network not supporting fibre channel.
  9. 14
The method of any of claims 12-13, wherein the additional labels correspond to entries in a label information base of a second network.
  10. 15
The method of any of claims 12-14, wherein a label indicator (205) is contained in the EISL header (203).
  11. 16
The method of any of claims 12-15, wherein a label indicator (205) is contained in the fibre channel header (211).
  12. 17
A computer readable medium comprising computer code for configuring a fibre channel switch to implement the method according to any of Claims 1 to 9 or 12 to 16.
  13. 18
Apparatus for tunneling fibre channel frames comprising a gateway (653) between a first network supporting fibre channel and a second network not supporting fibre channel, the gateway comprising:means for receiving a fibre channel frame;means for identifying an incoming label (665) associated with the fibre channel frame, the incoming label (665) determined using fibre channel routing mechanisms;means for swapping the incoming label associated with the fibre channel frame with an outgoing label (673), the outgoing label determined by referencing an entry in the label information base associated with the gateway (653);means for inserting additional labels (675) to the fibre channel frame, wherein the additional labels are determined using non-fibre channel routing mechanisms, the additional labels being used to forward the frame in the second network;means for adding a control word (671) to the fibre channel frame to enable the fibre channel frame to be reordered in a sequence of fibre channel frames;and means for transmitting the fibre channel frame (653) over the second network not supporting fibre channel.
  14. 19
Apparatus according to Claim 18 further comprising means for implementing the method according to any of Claims 12 to 16.
