Light source with organic layer and photoluminescent layer

Abstract

A light source (200) comprises an organic light-emitting device (100), which emits radiation having a first spectrum, and a phosphor layer (115) which absorbs a portion of the light emitted by the organic light-emitting layer (100) and which emits light having a second spectrum. The organic light-emitting device comprises an organic light-emitting layer (100) disposed between a pair of electrodes, and at least a charge-blocking layer disposed between the organic light-emitting layer and one of the electrodes. The phosphor layer (115) typically absorbs less than all of the light emitted by the organic light-emitting layer (100) and typically covers the entire organic light-emitting device. The light emitted by the organic light-emitting layer (100) is mixed with the light emitted by the phosphor layer (115) to produce light having a third spectrum.

10 claims: 2 independent, 8 dependent

  1. 1
A light source (200, 300, 400) comprising:an organic light-emitting device (100) which emits light having a first spectrum;the organic light-emitting device (100) comprising an organic light-emitting layer (110) disposed between a pair of electrodes (120, 130), and at least a charge-blocking layer (116, 126) disposed between the organic light-emitting layer (110) and an electrode (120, 130);and a phosphor layer (115)which absorbs a portion of the light emitted by the organic light-emitting device (100) and which emits light having a second spectrum, wherein the portion of light absorbed by the phosphor layer (115) is less than all of the light emitted by the organic light-emitting device (100).
  2. 10
A method of making a lighting device (200, 300, 400) comprising the steps of:forming an organic light-emitting device (100) by disposing an organic light-emitting layer (110) between a pair of electrodes (120, 130), and disposing at least a charge-blocking layer (116, 126) between the organic light-emitting layer (110) and an electrode (120, 130);and forming a layer of photoluminescent material on the organic light-emitting device (100), which layer of photoluminescent material absorbs less than all of the light emitted by the organic light-emitting device (100);wherein the light emitted by the organic light-emitting device (100) mixes with the light emitted by the photoluminescent material to produce white light.
