  1. 1
An intervertebral disc replacement device, including:first and second plate members (100a-d), each having first (104a-d) and second (108a-d) spaced apart surfaces, the first surfaces thereof opposing one another, the second surfaces thereof facing away from one another for engagement with respective endplates of adjacent vertebral bones in a spinal column;a curvate socket (102d, 200c2,g2,k2,p,q, 200t) having an inner surface, the curvate socket being at least partially integral with, and in fixed orientation with respect to, one of the first surfaces of the first and second plate members;and a semispherical protuberance (102c, 206d2,h2,12) depending from the other of the first surfaces of the first and second plate members, and being movingly engaged with the inner surface of the curvate socket, wherein the engagement of the semispherical protuberance within the curvate socket permits articulation therebetween, but does not permit substantial separation of the semispherical protuberance from any part of the inner surface of the curvate socket when the first and second plate members are subject to either of compression forces or tensile forces, and wherein the semispherical protuberance includes a series of slots that render the protuberance radially compressible and a central bore (122c, 222j-l, 222d2,h2,l2) for receiving a deflection preventing element (124c,_224j-l,_224d2,h2,l2)_operable to assist in preventing separation of the first and second plate members when they are subject to tensile force.
