  1. 1
An apparatus (100) for delivering a dosage of a liquid, the apparatus comprising:a peristaltic pump (104) configured to pump a liquid, the peristaltic pump comprising a pumping motor (102);means for developing a heartbeat signal (140) comprising a controller (134) for operating the motor, the controller being configured for switching the motor (102) between an on position or an off position to thereby control the liquid delivered by the pump (104), whereby the controller (134) produces a heartbeat signal (140) comprising a regular beat to thereby control the motor (102);and the apparatus (100) further comprises a watchdog circuit (136) configured to monitor the heartbeat signal (140) to determine if the controller (134) is operating correctly and to disable the pumping motor (102) in response to irregularities in the heartbeat signal (140), characterized in that : the motor (102) is controlled by a power switch (122) and a ground switch (124) such that when the power switch (122) and the ground switch (124) are both in a conductive state power is supplied to the motor (102);and wherein separate signals (130,132) are used to control the power switch (122) and the ground switch (124) whereby the watchdog circuit (136) provides an enable signal (132) to the ground switch (124) and the controller (134) provides a stop signal (130) to the power switch (122).
  2. 15
A method for controlling a dosage delivery system, the method comprising:a controller circuit (134) asserting a controller signal (130) to cause a pumping motor (102) to operate;the controller circuit developing a controller heartbeat signal (140) comprising a regular beat;a watchdog circuit (136) receiving the controller heartbeat signal (140) and monitoring the controller heartbeat signal to ensure that the controller circuit (134) is providing a valid beat at an acceptable rate to thereby verify that the controller circuit is operating correctly;the watchdog circuit (136) asserting a watchdog signal (140) to cause the pumping motor (102) to operate if the controller circuit (134) is providing a valid heartbeat signal (140);activating the pumping motor (102) so as the move a peristaltic pumping mechanism (104) a desired distance when both the controller signal and watchdog signal are asserted;and the watchdog circuit disabling the pumping motor in the absence of a regular beat.
