Position detection and location tracking in a wireless network

Abstract

A system and method for performing real-time position detection and motion tracking of mobile communications devices moving about in a defined space comprised of a plurality of locales is provided. A plurality of access points are disposed about the space to provide an interface between mobile devices and a network having functionality and data available or accessible therefrom. Knowledge of adjacency of locales may be used to better determine the location of the mobile device as it transitions between locales and feedback may be provided to monitor the status and configuration of the access points.

  1. 1
A wireless device location system, comprising a network, Including a plurality of uniquely Identified access points (110; 310) linked to one or more computing device coupled to a set of storage devices, wherein said access points (110; 310) are configured to detect the signal strength of a wireless device (120); means for determining and storing the signal strength of signals generated by the wireless device (120) at each access point (110; 310) when the wireless device (120) is located at various points in an area; and a location module (170) that receives signal strength data from the access points (110; 310) via the network and determines the location of the wireless device (120); characterized by :means (150) for creating a digital map (200) of the area, including obstructions (O1, O2) which distort signals received at the access points (110;310), and places where the wireless device (120) can travel and cannot travel;means (160) for using the digital map to create a signal strength model for each access point (110;310), including means for determining a signal strength of signals generated by the wireless device (120) at each access point (110;310) when the wireless device is located at various points in the area and means for correlating the determined signal strengths with the digital map to generate a statistical signal strength model;and in said location module, means for receiving signal strength data from the access points (110;310) via the network and, for each access point where a signal strength Is determined, comparing the received signal strength data with the statistical signal strength model for that access point (110;310), and determining the location based on the comparisons.
  2. 4
A location system according to any of the preceding claims, characterized in that the means for creating the signal strength model comprises means for generating simulated signal strength data.
  3. 5
A location system according to any of the preceding claims, characterized in that the means for creating the digital map (200) of the area comprises means for creating a set of locales (A, B1, B2, C1, C2, D1, D2, E, F) which are accessible to the wireless device (120) and means for using the digital map of the area for determining the placement of each access point (110;310) within the area.
  4. 6
A method for determining a location of a wireless device (120) within a predefined area having a plurality of access points (110; 310) located within the area, each of which Is connected to a network (115) and is linked to one or more computing device coupled to a set of storage devices, comprising:detecting at said access points (110;310) the signal strength of the wireless device;determining and storing the signal strength of signals generated by the wireless device at each access point when the wireless device is located at various points In the area;and at a location module (170), receiving signal strength data from the access points via the network and determining the location of the wireless device (120);said method being characterized by further comprising: creating a digital map (200) of the area, including obstructions (O1, O2) which distort signals received from the wireless device (120) and places where the wireless device (120) can travel and cannot travel;using the digital map (200) to create a signal strength model for each access point, including determining a signal strength of signals generated by the wireless device (120) at each access point when the wireless device is located at various points in the area and correlating the determined signal strengths with the digital map to generate a statistical signal strength model;and receiving signal strength data from the access points (110;310) via the network and, for each access point Where a signal strength is determined, comparing the received signal strength data with the statistical signal strength model for that access point (110;310), and determining the location based on the comparisons.
