10 claims: 2 independent, 8 dependent

  1. 1
A mobile device (306), comprising:a transceiver (200) configured to tune to a first non-preferred carrier associated with a first network (503) or a second preferred carrier associated with a second network (504);a learning function configured to construct a habit profile that relates certain periods of time to the availability of the second network (504);and a processor (110) configured to: tune the transceiver (200) to the first non-preferred carrier;register with the first network (503) over the first carrier, and periodically attempt to tune the transceiver (200) to the second preferred carrier based on the habit profile;wherein the learning function only tracks habits with a frequency above a certain threshold.
  2. 2
A device (306) according to Claim 1, wherein periodic attempts to tune to the second preferred carrier are increased based on the habit profile.
  3. 3
A device (306) according to Claim 1, further comprising a table (600) containing information related to the first and second networks (503, 504) and wherein the processor (110) is configured to periodically attempt to tune to the second preferred carrier only if the information in the table (600) indicates that the mobile device (306) may be within range of the second preferred carrier.
  4. 4
A device (306) according to Claim 1, further comprising:a table (600) containing information related to the first and second networks (503, 504);and a positioner configured to determine the position of the mobile device (306) relative to the second network (504);wherein the processor (110) is configured to periodically attempt to tune the transceiver (200) to the second preferred carrier only if the information in the table (600) indicates that the second network (504) is present and the positioner determines that the mobile device (306) is within range of the second preferred carrier.
  5. 5
A device (306) according to Claim 4, wherein the positioner can use an RSSI, bit error determination, time of arrival, angle of arrival, or beam forming techniques when determining the position of the mobile device (306) relative to the second network (504).
  6. 6
A device (306) according to Claim 4, wherein the positioner is a GPS receiver.
  7. 7
A device (306) according to Claim 4, wherein the table (600) includes, in whole or in part, information related to the position of the second network (504).
  8. 8
A device (306) according to Claim 1, further comprising a scheduler configured to store information about certain events, wherein the processor (110) is configured to periodically attempt to tune the transceiver (200) to the second preferred carrier based on the information stored in the scheduler.
  9. 9
A wireless communication network (503), comprising:a table (600) containing information related to a preferred wireless communication network;and a plurality of mobile devices (306), each mobile device (306) comprising: a transceiver (200) configured to tune to a first non-preferred carrier associated with the wireless communication network (503) or a second preferred carrier associated with the preferred wireless communication network (504);a learning function configured to construct a habit profile that relates certain periods of time to the availability of the preferred wireless communication network (504), wherein the learning function only tracks habits with a frequency above a certain threshold, and a processor (110) configured to: tune the transceiver (200) to the first non-preferred carrier;register with the wireless communication network (503) over the first carrier;and periodically attempt to tune the transceiver (200) to the second preferred carrier only if the information in the table (600) indicates that the mobile device (306) may be within range of the second preferred carrier, wherein the period between attempts to tune the transceiver (200) is influenced by the habit profile.
  10. 10
A wireless communication network (503) according to Claim 9, wherein the habit profile relates certain periods of time to the availability of the preferred wireless communication network (504), and wherein the processor (110) periodically attempts to tune the transceiver to the second preferred carrier based on the habit profile.
