14 claims: 6 independent, 8 dependent

  1. 1
A method for an emulator for logically decoupling a host operating system of a host computer system from a processor of the host computer system, comprising the steps of:(a) emulating on the host computer system the operation of a guest operating system;characterized by the steps of (b) replacing in the processor a first processor setting with a second processor setting, the first processor setting associated with hardware functionality provided by the host operating system and the second processor setting associated with hardware functionality provided by the guest operating system;and (c) directly controlling the processor with respect to the functionality associated with the replaced processor setting.
  2. 7
A method according to any of claims 2 to 6, further comprising the steps of:reading in from the memory the first processor setting;and writing to the processor the first processor setting, wherein the host operating system is logically coupled to the processor for the function related to the first processor setting associated with the host operating system.
  3. 8
A method according to any of claims 1 to 7, wherein the emulator operates as an application program on the host operating system.
  4. 9
A method according to any of claims 1 to 8, wherein the first and second processor settings are associated with a supervisor state of the processor.
  5. 10
A method according to any of claims 1 to 9, wherein the processor comprises an identifiable register for holding the actual processor setting.
  6. 11
A method according to any of claims 1 to 10, wherein the memory is RAM memory.
