Random access slide stainer with liquid waste segregation

Abstract

A liquid aspiration system for removing liquids from a microscope slide comprising: a microscope slide from which liquid is to be aspirated;a source of vacuum anda hollow chamber with an attachment to a source of vacuum; char acterized by: a flat surface on the exterior of said hollow chamber having at least one hole communicating between the exterior and interior of said hollow chamber;an actuator which causes said flat surface to contact liquid on the microscope slide.

16 claims: 9 independent, 7 dependent

  1. 1
A liquid aspiration system for removing liquids from a microscope slide comprising:a microscope slide (17, 25) from which liquid is to be aspirated;a source of vacuum (82);anda hollow chamber (40, 74) with an attachment to a source of vacuum;characterized by: a flat surface on the exterior of said hollow chamber having at least one hole (41) communicating between the exterior and interior of said hollow chamber;an actuator (54, 73) which causes said flat surface to contact liquid on the microscope slide.
  2. 4
A liquid aspiration system as claimed in any of claims 1-3, wherein the hollow chamber has more than one hole through which to aspirate liquid.
  3. 5
A liquid aspiration system as claimed in any of claims 1-4, wherein the flat surface contacts the liquid on the slide but does not contact the slide surface.
  4. 6
A liquid aspiration system as claimed in any of claims 1-5, wherein the flat surface is essentially parallel to the microscope slide when the application head is caused to contact the liquid on the slide surface.
  5. 7
A liquid aspiration system as claimed in any of claims 1-6, wherein a plurality of slides are mounted in a horizontal position and further comprising a controller (86) for selecting from which slide liquid is being aspirated.
  6. 9
A method of aspirating liquid from the surface of a microscope slide comprising:providing a source of vacuum (82);andchanneling that vacuum to a hollow chamber (40, 74);characterized by: the hollow chamber having a flat surface through which at least one hole (41) communicates between the exterior and interior of the hollow chamber;andby means of an actuator (54, 73) moving the hollow chamber to cause the flat surface to contact liquid on the microscope slide.
  7. 13
A method as claimed in any of claims 9-12, wherein the flat surface contacts the liquid on the slide but does not contact the slide surface.
  8. 14
A method as claimed in any of claims 9-13, wherein the flat surface is essentially parallel to the microscope slide when the application head is caused to contact the liquid on the slide surface.
  9. 15
A method as claimed in any of claims 9-14, wherein a plurality of slides are mounted in a horizontal position and further comprising a controller (86) for selecting from which slide liquid is being aspirated.
