  1. 1
A method for processing data for wireless transmission over multiple transmission channels in a multi-channel communication system, comprising:determining characteristics of a plurality of transmission channels available for data transmission;determining a coding/modulation scheme by, for each of plural coding/modulation schemes, determining a number of transmission channels that have their characteristic greater than or equal to a set-point for that scheme, thereby determining the coding/modulation scheme that provides the highest throughput and determining a threshold for that scheme;selecting one or more, and fewer than all, available transmission channels based on the determined coding/modulation scheme and the threshold;determining a normalization factor for distributing total power amongst the selected transmission channels;coding data for all selected transmission channels based the determined coding scheme to provide coded data;modulating the coded data for all selected transmission channels based on the determined scheme to provide modulation symbols;and weighting modulation symbols for each selected transmission channel based on a respective weight indicative of a transmit power level for the selected transmission channel and derived based on the determined characteristics of the selected transmission channel and the normalization factor.
  2. 26
A transmitter unit (310) for a multi-channel wireless communication system, comprising:a controller (334) configured to: receive channel state information, CSI, indicative of characteristics of a plurality of transmission channels available for data transmission;determine a coding/modulation scheme by, for each of plural coding/modulation schemes, determining a number of transmission channels that have their characteristic greater than or equal to a set-point for that scheme, thereby determining the coding/modulation scheme that provides the highest throughput, and determining a threshold for that scheme;select one or more, and fewer than all, available transmission channels based on the determined coding/modulation scheme and the threshold;determine a normalization factor for distributing the total power amongst the selected transmission channels;a transmit data processor (314) coupled to the controller (334) configured to receive and code data for all selected transmission channels based on the determined coding scheme to provide coded data, modulate the coded data for all selected transmission channels based on the determined modulation scheme to provide modulation symbols, and weight modulation symbols for each selected transmission channel based on a respective weight, wherein each weight is indicative of a transmit power level for the corresponding selected transmission channel and is derived based on the characteristics of the selected transmission channel and the normalization factor.
  3. 35
A computer readable medium comprising instructions which, when executed by a processor, result in the performance of the method steps of any of claims 1 to 25.
