10 claims: 7 independent, 3 dependent

  1. 1
A cordless power tool system comprising:a rechargeable battery pack (16) including a first housing (22) and a battery pack terminal block (26) including a positive terminal blade (62) and a negative terminal blade (62);and a battery charger (20) including a second housing (110) and positive and negative female terminals (114) for receiving the positive and negative terminal blades (62), respectively, the second housing (110) including a coupling portion (112) for mechanically engaging the battery pack (16), characterised in that the first housing (22) defines a pair of laterally spaced guide rails (52), that the battery pack terminal block (26) is disposed between the guide rails (52), that the second housing (110) includes an open deck portion (111) for vertically receiving the battery pack (16) and that the coupling portion (112) defines a pair of laterally spaced grooves (54) for receiving the pair of laterally spaced guide rails (52) such that longitudinal translation of the battery pack (16) toward the coupling portion (112) prevents vertical displacement of the battery pack (16) relative to the second housing (110).
  2. 2
A cordless power tool system according to daim 1, wherein the first housing (22) indudes:first and second halves (28) and (30) defining first and second chambers (36) and (40);and a battery (24) disposed in the second chamber (40);the battery pack terminal block (26) electrically connected to the battery (24) and disposed in the first chamber (36) and captured between the first and second halves (28) and (30).
  3. 4
A cordless power tool system according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the battery pack terminal block (26) is transversely disposed between the guide rails (52), the guide rails (52) and the positive and negative terminal blades (62) having transversely aligned forward ends.
  4. 5
A cordless power tool system according to any one of the preceding daims, wherein the first housing (22) includes first and second laterally spaced sides and a rear side oriented substantially perpendicular thereto, and further wherein the first housing (22) includes first and second protrusions (160) disposed adjacent the rear side on the first and second laterally spaced sides, respectively, both of the first and second protrusions (160) being generally convexly curved and adapted to facilitate manual extraction of the battery pack (16) from the cordless power tool (10).
  5. 6
A cordless power tool system according to any one of the preceding claims, further including a cordless power tool (10) including a tool terminal block (76) having a pair of male terminals (86) and (90) and a pair of female terminals (88) and (92), the male terminals (86) and (90) operative for use with an AC/DC converter (18), the pair of female terminals (88) and (92) each adapted to receive one of the positive and negative terminal blades (62), the guide rails (52) each formed to include an aperture (96) for non-operatively receiving an associated one of the pair of male terminals (86) and (90).
  6. 7
A method of charging a battery pack (16) for a cordless power tool (10), the battery pack (16) including a first housing (22) and a battery pack terminal block (26) having positive and negative terminal blades (62) and laterally spaced apart guide rails (52), the method comprising the steps of:providing a battery charger (20) having a second housing (110) and positive and negative female terminals (114) recessed within the second housing (110), the second housing (110) further having a coupling portion (112);mechanically coupling the battery pack (16) and the charger (20);and electrically coupling the positive and negative female terminals (114) with the positive and negative terminal blades (62), respectively, characterised by providing the battery pack (16) such that the positive and negative terminal blades are disposed between the guide rails (52), by providing the battery charger (20) with an open deck (111) with which the battery pack (16) is vertically engaged, by providing the battery charger (20) such that the coupling portion (112) comprises a pair of laterally spaced grooves (54) and by the guide rails (52) with the grooves (54) slidably engaged so as to substantially prevent vertical displacement of the battery pack (16) relative to the charger (20).
  7. 8
A method according to daim 7, further characterized by the step of concealing both of the positive and negative female terminals (114) with an insulating portion (142) of the battery charger housing (110), each insulating portion induding a pair of vertically orientated sidewalls (146) and a horizontally oriented upper segment (148).
  8. 10
A method according to any one of claims 7 to 9, wherein the battery pack terminal block (26) is positioned adjacent an upper side of the first housing (22), and further characterized by the step of inverting the battery pack (16) before the step of vertically engaging the open deck (111) with the battery pack (16).
