  1. 1
A wireless local area network (30), comprising:a gateway (36) connected to the wireless local area network (30) and an internet protocol network, hereinafter abbreviated as IP network (40), for providing an interface between the wireless local area network and the IP network;and a plurality of access points (46a, 46b) coupled to the gateway (36) and each being adapted to provide wireless service to one or more mobile stations (34a, 34b) in a geographical area (44a, 44b);characterized by : said gateway (36) being adapted to maintain, for each mobile station operating within the wireless local area network, an IP address for said mobile station and a media access control address, hereinafter abbreviated as MAC address, for the access point currently providing wireless service to the mobile station;each one of said plurality of access points (46a, 46b) being adapted to maintain, for each mobile station being provided service within their geographical area, an IP address for said mobile station and a corresponding MAC address for said mobile station;and means for forwarding received IP data packets based on the maintained MAC addresses.
  2. 3
The wireless local area network (30) of one of claims 1 or 2, further comprising a distribution system (48) for coupling said gateway (36) to said plurality of access points (46a, 46b), said distribution system (48) being wired to said gateway (36) and said plurality of access points (46a, 46b).
  3. 4
The wireless local area network (30) of one of claims 1 to 3, further comprising a wireless address resolution protocol (hereinafter abbreviated as WiARP) server (38) connected to said gateway (36), said wiARP server being adapted to store a look-up table of the IP address for each mobile station operating within the wireless local area network and the MAC address for the access point currently providing wireless service to the mobile station.
  4. 5
A method of delivering of internet protocol data packets, hereinafter abbreviated as IP data packets, to one or more mobile stations (34a, 34b) of a wireless network (30), comprising a plurality of access points (46a, 46b) being associated with said mobile stations (34a, 34b), and wherein said plurality of access points (46a, 46b) are coupled by a gateway (36) to an IP network (40), the method being characterized by :upon receiving an IP data packet with an IP destination address for a mobile station operating in the wireless network, determining (55, 56, 57), based on a stored correspondence table, a media access control address, hereinafter abbreviated as MAC address, for an access point with which said mobile station is currently associated;forwarding (58) the IP data packet to said access point using said MAC address linked to said IP destination address;upon receipt of the IP data packet, linking (61, 62, 63), based on a stored correspondence table, said IP destination address for said mobile station to a MAC address for said mobile station by said access point;and delivering (64) said forwarded IP data packet bearing said IP destination address to said mobile station having said MAC address linked to said IP destination address.
  5. 8
The method of one of claims 5 to 7, further comprising:maintaining a second data store (50a, 50b) at each one of said at least two access points (46a, 46b), said second data store at each one of said at least two access points comprised of IP and MAC addresses for each mobile station associated with that access point.
  6. 9
The method of one of claims 5 to 8, wherein the wireless network (30) is a wireless local area network conforming to IEEE Standard 802.11.
