Method and device for sterile mixing of solutions

Abstract

A method for mixing a solution includes positioning a collapsible container within a chamber of a substantially rigid tank. The collapsible container bounds a compartment. A mixer is disposed within the compartment of the container. Two or more components are fed into the compartment of the container. At least one of the components is a liquid. The mixer is raised and lowered within the compartment of the container so as to mix the components.

28 claims: 20 independent, 8 dependent

  1. 1
A method for mixing a solution, the method comprising:positioning a collapsible container within a chamber of a substantially rigid tank, the collapsible container bounding a compartment, a mixer being disposed within the compartment of the container;feeding two or more components into the compartment of the container, at least one of the components being a liquid;andraising and lowering the mixer within the compartment of the container so as to mix the components.
  2. 4
A method as recited in any of claims 1 to 3, further comprising inflating the collapsible container with a gas within the chamber of the tank.
  3. 5
A method as recited in any of claims 1 to 4, wherein the collapsible container has a volume of at least 20 liters.
  4. 6
A method as recited in any of claims 1 to 5, wherein the collapsible container has a volume of at least 500 liters.
  5. 7
A method as recited in any of claims 1 to 6, wherein the act of feeding the at least two or more components comprises at least one of the components being a substantially dry material.
  6. 10
A method as recited in any of claims 1 to 9, wherein a shaft has a first end coupled with the mixer disposed within the compartment of the collapsible container and an opposing second end disposed outside of the collapsible container, the method further comprising connecting the second end of the shaft to a driver for selectively raising and lower the shaft.
  7. 11
A method as recited in any of claims 1 to 10, further comprising spraying a liquid into the compartment of the collapsible container so as to capture any component suspended in air within the compartment or resting on the collapsible container.
  8. 12
A method as recited in any of claims 1 to 11, further comprising:removing the mixed components from the compartment of the collapsible container;andinjecting gas into the compartment of the collapsible container as the mixed components are removed therefrom.
  9. 13
A method as recited in any of claims 1 to 12, further comprising:removing the mixed components from the compartment of the collapsible container;withdrawing the collapsible container with the mixer therein from the chamber of the tank;andinserting a new collapsible container with a new mixer therein into the chamber of the tank.
  10. 14
A method as recited in any of claims 1 to 13, further comprising:draining the mixed components from the collapsible container through an exit tube;passing the mixed components through a sterilizing filter;anddispensing the sterile mixed components into a sterile container.
  11. 15
A mixing tank assembly comprising:a side wall having an interior surface at least partially bounding a chamber;a floor disposed within or at the base of the chamber, the floor having an opening extending therethrough;a collapsible container disposed within the chamber so as to rest on the floor, the collapsible container bounding a compartment;a mixer disposed within the compartment of the container;anda shaft having a first end coupled with the mixer and an opposing second end extending down through the opening in the floor.
  12. 18
A mixing tank assembly as recited in any of claims 15 to 17, wherein the collapsible container comprises a flexible bag.
  13. 19
A mixing tank assembly as recited in any of claims 15 to 18, wherein the floor has a substantially conical or frustaconical configuration.
  14. 20
A mixing tank assembly as recited in any of claims 15 to 19, wherein the side wall comprises:a substantially C-shaped body bounding a doorway;anda door hingedly mounted in the doorway so as to move between and open and closed position
  15. 22
A mixing tank assembly as recited in any of claims 15 to 21, further comprising means for selectively heating or cooling a solution within the chamber bounded by the side wall.
  16. 24
A mixing tank assembly as recited in any of claims 15 to 23, wherein the side wall comprises an inner wall, an outer wall, and a central wall disposed therebetween, a fluid channel being formed between the inner wall and the central wall, insulation being disposed between the central wall and the outer wall.
  17. 25
A mixing tank assembly as recited in any of claims 15 to 24, wherein the floor is rigidly secured to the side wall.
  18. 26
A mixing tank assembly as recited in any of claims 15 to 25, wherein the side wall has an interior surface with a cross sectional transverse configuration that is polygonal.
  19. 27
A mixing tank assembly as recited in any of claims 15 to 26, wherein the cross sectional transverse configuration is hexagonal.
  20. 28
A mixing tank assembly as recited in any of claims 15 to 27, wherein the chamber bounded by the floor and the side wall has a volume of at least 100 liters.
