Tubular medical prostheses

Abstract

A tubular prosthesis device (10) for use within the body. The device (10) includes, a metal filament (11) material formed of metal outer member (4) having an exposed outer surface and a core (8) within the extended outer member formed of a different metal than the outer member. The core (8) is secured within and substantially enclosed by the outer member (10). The device can be reduced to a small size for introduction into the body lumen and expandable to a sufficiently large size to engage the wall of the body lumen. Stents (10) formed of composite wires (11) are shown.

20 claims: 10 independent, 10 dependent

  1. 1
A tubular medical stent formed of a metal wire (1) composed of a core (8) and a sheath (4) surrounding the core (8), the core (8) being formed of a first metal and the sheath (4) being formed of a second metal, characterised in that the stent is capable of reduction to a small size for introduction into a body lumen and is self-expandable to a sufficiently large size to engage the wall of the body lumen, in that the first metal has a first selected thickness and the second metal has a second selected thickness whereby the combined effect of the selected thicknesses serves to enhance the radio-opacity of the stent, in that the first metal has a greater density than the second metal, and in that the second metal has a greater elasticity than the first metal.
  2. 4
The stent of any one of the preceding claims characterised in that the stent is formed by knitting, weaving or crocheting the wire (11).
  3. 5
The stent of any one of the preceding claims characterised in that the first metal has a density of at least about 9900 kg/m 3 (9.9 g/cc).
  4. 6
The stent of any one of the preceding claims characterised in that the first metal is selected from the group consisting of tungsten, tantalum, rhenium, iridium, silver, gold, bismuth and platinum.
  5. 8
The stent of any one of the preceding claims characterised in that the second metal is selected from the group consisting of stainless steel, superelastic alloys and precursors of superelastic alloys.
  6. 9
The stent of any one of the preceding claims characterised in that the wire (11) has an overall diameter of no greater than about 0.38 mm (0.015 inch).
  7. 11
The stent of any one of the preceding claims characterised in that the core (8) has a diameter greater than about 1% of the overall diameter of the wire (11).
  8. 17
The stent of any one of the preceding claims characterised in that the first metal has a modulus of elasticity of no greater than about 500 GPa.
  9. 19
The stent of any one of the preceding claims characterised in that the stent has a length in the range of about 2-8 cm.
  10. 20
The stent of any one of the preceding claims characterised in that the stent has a diameter in the range of about 4-12 mm.
