18 claims: 10 independent, 8 dependent

  1. 1
A computer networking device (26) for improving data transfer via a computer network (20), the computer networking device (26) being configured to receive Hypertext Transfer Protocol HTTP requests from a plurality of clients (12) via a plurality of client Transmission Control Protocol TCP connections (120), the computer networking device (26) being characterized in that it is further configured to:monitor at least one response parameter for each of a plurality of server TCP connections (124) from the computer networking device (26) to a single server (14);select one of the plurality of server TCP connections (124) based on the monitored response parameter;and route the HTTP requests via the selected server TCP connection (124) to a corresponding socket (124a) on the server (14) as a multiplexed HTTP request.
  2. 5
The computer networking device (26) of any one of claims 2 to 4, wherein the HTTP multiplexor/demultiplexor (104) is configured to select the server TCP connection (124) for receiving the multiplexed HTTP requests by identifying the server TCP connection (124) having the least-lengthy response time based on the monitoring.
  3. 6
The computer networking device (26) of any preceding claim, wherein the server TCP connections (124) are persistent.
  4. 7
A computer networking system for use with a computer network (20), the system comprising:a server (14);a plurality of clients (12);and a computer networking device (26) as claimed in any preceding claim, positioned intermediate the server (14) and the plurality of clients (12).
  5. 8
A computer networking method for processing Hypertext Transfer Protocol HTTP requests from a plurality of clients (12) via a plurality of client Transmission Control Protocol TCP connections (120), the method characterized by :monitoring a plurality of server TCP connections (124) from a computer networking device (26) to a single server (14) to determine at least one response parameter for each of the server TCP connections (124);selecting one of the server TCP connections (124) based on the determined response parameter;and routing the HTTP requests to an individual network socket (124a) on the server (14) via a server TCP connection (124) as a multiplexed HTTP request.
  6. 11
The method of any one of claims 8 to 10, wherein the client (120) and server (124) TCP connections are persistent.
  7. 12
The method of any one of claims 8 to 11, wherein selecting one of the server TCP connections (124) based on the determined response parameter comprises identifying a server socket (124a) with a least-lengthy response time.
  8. 13
The method of any one of claims 8 to 12, wherein selecting one of the server TCP connections (124) based on the determined response parameter comprises identifying a last-accessed server socket (124a).
  9. 14
The method of any one of claims 8 to 13, wherein selecting one of the server TCP connections (124) based on the determined response parameter comprises identifying a server socket (124a) with the fewest number of unfulfilled requests.
  10. 15
The method of any one of claims 8 to 14, further comprising listening for HTTP responses from the individual server socket (124a).
