  1. 1
A method of verifying correct configuration of a network element having a plurality of shelves by automatically assigning a shelf identifier to a shelf (202) of a network element, the method comprising the steps of:a) connecting a cable (206) adapted to carry a point-to-point channel (302) and a shared communications channel (304, 214) from a controller shelf (212, 204) to said shelf (202) of said: network element;b) assigning, by the controller shelf (204) over the point-to-point channel (302), a cable identifier to said cable, said cable identifier corresponding to an identifier of a port to which said cable is connected;c) determining by said shelf, a communications address in dependence upon said cable identifier;d) requesting, by said controller shelf via said shared communications channel (304, 214) and using the communications address, information about said shelf;e) determining, by said controller shelf using requested information received from said shelf, whether said shelf is connected to said controller shelf in accordance with predetermined system configuration rules, and f) assigning, by said controller shelf, said shelf identifier to said shelf responsive to said shelf being connected in accordance with said predetermined system configuration rules.
  2. 6
A system for verifying correctness of the configuration of a network element having a plurality of shelves (202) controlled by a controller shelf (212), each shelf having shelf configuration information, the system comprising:i) a control management point (414, 406) on said controller shelf (212), for determining based on predetermined system configuration rules, whether said shelves are correctly connected within said network element;ii) a multi-shelf connector (204) for automatically assigning a port identification to a port upon connection to a shelf;iii) a shelf management point (4,10) on each shelf (202) for aligning an address to said shelf upon connection to said port based on said port identification assigned to said port on said multi-shelf connector;iv) a cable (206) for connecting each said shelf to a respective port on said multi-shelf connector, wherein said cable includes a point-to-point channel (302) and a shared communications channel (304, 214), for establishing a point-to-point connection between said port and said shelf for transmitting to said shelf management point said port identification, v) a table for associating over the point-to-point channel (302), a cable identifier to said cable, said cable identifier corresponding to an identifier of a port to which said cable is connected, the controller shelf (212) being able to request, via said shared communications channel (304, 214) and using the communications address, information about said shelf.
