  1. 1
A method of controlling a communication device that transmits digital data over a plurality of frequency channels, the method comprising:a) selecting (206) an initial transmission power allocation and a corresponding data rate allocation for each channel;characterised in that the method comprises the step of b) identifying (208) in a first channel a first ratio that is greater than a second ratio of a second channel, in which the first and second ratios are, respectively: a first decrement in transmission power a first data rate decrement and a second decrement in transmission power a second data rate decrement c) reducing (208) the initial transmission power allocation of the first channel by the first decrement in transmission power;and d) reallocating (210) that portion of the initial transmission power allocation of the first channel by which the initial transmission power allocation of the first channel has been reduced, to one or more channels other than the first channel.
  2. 9
An arrangement for use in a communication device operable to transmit digital data over a plurality of frequency channels, the arrangement comprising:1) a multi-frequency transmission circuit (30) operable to transmit digital data over the plurality of frequency channels, each of the plurality of frequency channels having a channel transmission power;characterised in that the arrangement comprises 2) a processor (54), operably connected to the multi-frequency transmission circuit to control the channel transmission power of each of the plurality of frequency channels, the processor being configured to: a) select an initial transmission power allocation and a corresponding data rate allocation for each channel;b) identify in a first channel, a first ratio that is greater than a second ratio of a second channel, in which the first and second ratios are, respectively: a first decrement in transmission power a first data rate decrement and a second decrement in transmission power a second data rate decrement c) reduce the initial transmission power allocation of the first channel by the first decrement in transmission power;and d) reallocate that portion of the initial transmission power allocation of the first channel by which the initial transmission power allocation of the first channel has been reduced, to one or more channels other than the first channel.
