On-line directory assistance system

Abstract

An approach for providing an on-line directory assistance service system for charging the directory assistance services that are provided over a packet switched network is disclosed. The system includes a server that tracks the number of directory listings that are transmitted to and displayed on a client access device (e.g., non-PC devices) and to prepare billing information based upon the number of directory listings. The system also includes a database that is coupled to the server and that stores the directory listings.

28 claims: 10 independent, 18 dependent

  1. 1
A method for providing directory assistance services over a packet switched network (115), the method comprising:receiving (301) a request message from an access device (105) for information;forwarding (303) the information to the access device (105) in response to the request message, wherein the information includes viewable and hidden data, the information being stored in a database (101) that is remotely located from the access device (105);the method being characterised in that the method further comprises: receiving a modification message to selectively replace selective hidden data with viewable data associated with the information from the access device (105);forwarding viewable data to replace the selective hidden data;and maintaining a record in the database (101) based upon the modification message.
  2. 9
A server (131) for providing directory assistance services over a packet switched network (115), the server (131) comprising means for receiving a request message from an access device (105) for information; means for forwarding the information to the access device (105) in response to the request message, wherein the information includes viewable and hidden data, the information being stored in a database (101) that is remotely located from the access device (105); the server being characterised in that the server further comprises:means for receiving a modification message to selectively replace selective hidden data with viewable data associated with the information from the access device (105);means for forwarding viewable data to replace the selective hidden data;and means for maintaining a record in the database (101) based upon the modification message.
  3. 18
The server (131) according to claims 9 to 17, further comprising:means for receiving a selection message from the access device (105), the selection message including encrypted data and state data associated with the information;and means for transmitting new decrypted viewable data of the information associated with the encrypted data to the access device (105).
  4. 19
The server (131) according to claims 11 to 18, further comprising:means for preparing billing information based upon the state data;and means for generating a report based upon the state data.
  5. 20
An on-line directory assistance service system (901), the system comprising:a server (131) configured to receive a request message for information over a packet switched network (115) from an access device (105), the server (131) being configured to forward the information to the access device (105) in response to the request message, wherein the information includes viewable and hidden data;and a database (101) coupled to the server (131) and configured to store the information, the on-line directory assistance system (901) being characterised in that the server (131) is further configured to receive a modification message to selectively replace selective hidden data with viewable data associated with the information from the access device (105), to forward viewable data to replace the selective hidden data, and to maintain a record in the database (101) based upon the modification message.
  6. 24
The system (901) according to claims 20 to 23, wherein the viewable data includes a name and an address, and the hidden data including at least one of a directory number, a mobile number, a pager number, a facsimile number, a voice-mail, an e-mail address, and a Uniform Resource Locator (URL) identifier.
  7. 25
The system (901) according to claims 20 to 24, wherein the server (131) is configured to use a Hyper Text Transfer Protocol (HTTP) to communicate with the access device (105), the packet switched network (115) being an Internet Protocol (IP) network.
  8. 26
The system (901) according to claims 20 to 25, wherein the access device (105) includes at least one of a personal computer (PC), a PDA (personal digital assistant), a web-appliance, an e-mail client, a web-enabled cell phone, and non-PC device.
  9. 27
The system (901) according to claims 20 to 26, wherein the information is provided in part by a Regional Bell Operating Company (RBOC).
  10. 28
A computer-readable medium carrying one or more sequences of one or more instructions for providing directory assistance services over a packet switched network (115), the one or more sequences of one or more instructions including instructions which, when executed by one or more processors (905), cause the one or more processors (905) to perform the steps of a method according to any of claims 1 to 8.
