12 claims: 12 independent, 0 dependent

  1. 1
A method for automatically estimating the subjective quality of a multimedia signal transmitted over a packet connection characterized in that the method comprises the steps of:determining the statistical distribution of the time spent by said packet connection in at least a low packet loss probability state and a high packet loss probability state, and determining the estimated effect of said statistical distribution on the subjective quality of said multimedia signal.
  2. 2
A method as defined in Claim 1, further comprising the steps of:determining the level of one or more impairments, said impairments being selected from the group consisting of jitter (402) and delay (403) and packet error rate (401) and CODEC distortion, and determining (404) the estimated effect of said impairments on the subjective quality of said multimedia signal.
  3. 3
A method as defined in Claim 2, further comprising the step of reporting said estimated subjective quality to a central database system following the termination of said multimedia signal.
  4. 4
A method as defined in Claim 2, further comprising the steps of comparing said estimated subjective quality to a threshold and sending an event message to a central management system if said subjective quality is below said threshold.
  5. 5
A method as defined in Claim 2, further comprising the insertion of a representation of the estimated subjective quality of the received multimedia signal into transmitted voice packets.
  6. 6
A method as defined in Claim 2, further comprising the periodic updating (701-704) of a counter (500, 501, 502, 503) wherein:when the estimated subjective quality is low, said counter (500-503) is reduced by an amount dependent on said subjective quality, and when the estimated subjective quality is high, said counter (500-503) is increased.
  7. 7
A system for automatically estimating the subjective quality of a plurality of multimedia signals transmitted over a packet network (202) characterized in that each multimedia signal is conveyed between two or more multimedia signal to packet conversion points (211, 212) and one or more of said conversion points (211, 212) are physically grouped within an enclosure, and the system comprises means for quality monitoring (207, 208) wherein said quality monitoring means (207, 208) comprises:means for monitoring one of said conversion points (211, 212) which means is contained within the same enclosure as one of said conversion points (211, 212), and means for estimating the subjective quality resulting from the conversion of received packets to a multimedia signal performed by one of said conversion points (211, 212);and wherein the quality monitoring means is adapted to: determine the statistical distribution of the time spent by said packet connection in at least a low packet loss probability state and a high packet loss probability state, and determine the estimated effect of said statistical distribution on the subjective quality of said multimedia signal.
  8. 8
A system as defined in Claim 7, wherein the quality monitoring means is adapted to:determine the level of one or more impairments, said impairments being selected from the group consisting of jitter (402) and delay (403) and packet error rate (401) and CODEC distortion, and determine (404) the estimated effect of said impairments on the subjective quality of said multimedia signal.
  9. 9
A system as defined in Claim 7, wherein the quality monitoring means is adapted to report the estimated subjective quality of the multimedia signal to a central database system following the termination of said multimedia signal.
  10. 10
A system as defined in Claim 7, wherein the quality monitoring means is adapted to compare the estimated subjective quality of the multimedia signal to a threshold and to send an event message to a central management system if said subjective quality is below said threshold.
  11. 11
A system as defined in Claim 7, wherein the quality monitoring means is adapted to insert a representation of the estimated subjective quality of the received multimedia signal into transmitted voice packets.
  12. 12
A system as defined in Claim 7, wherein the quality monitoring means comprises a counter adapted such that:when the estimated subjective quality is low, said counter is reduced by an amount dependent on said subjective quality, and when the estimated subjective quality is high, said counter is increased.
