Abstract

A nozzle assembly (40) is disclosed that is capable of controlling pressure of comestible fluid exiting the nozzle assembly (40). The nozzle assembly (40) further includes a hand held comestible fluid dispenser (16) capable of cooling and selectively dispensing one of several comestible fluids supplied thereto.

A comestible fluid dispensing apparatus, comprising: a nozzle having at least one wall;a valve received within the nozzle, the valve and the at least one wall defining a substantially fluid-tight chamber within the nozzle for receiving and retaining comestible fluid;and an actuator coupled to the valve for moving the valve in telescoping relationship with respect to the nozzle, the valve having at least one open position and a range of closed positions along the chamber conesponding to a range of comestible fluid pressures within the substantially fluid- tight chamber.

    A comestible fluid dispensing apparatus, comprising:a nozzle having a chamber defined therein for receiving and retaining comestible fluid;a plunger valve in telescoping relationship within the nozzle, the plunger valve defining a wall of the chamber;and an actuator coupled to the plunger valve, the plunger valve having an open position in which comestible fluid in the chamber can exit the chamber and a range of closed positions in which comestible fluid in the chamber cannot exit the chamber, the plunger valve movable by the actuator through the open position and the range of closed positions.

    A comestible fluid dispenser, comprising:a nozzle having a dispensing outlet and having an elongated chamber defined therein for receiving and retaining comestible fluid;and a plunger valve in the elongated chamber and movable through a range of positions including at least two closed positions in which the plunger valve blocks flow of comestible fluid through the discharge port and at least one open position in which the plunger valve does not block flow of comestible fluid through the dispensing outlet, the at least two closed positions including a first closed position in which fluid pressure of the comestible fluid in the nozzle is at a first pressure and a second closed position in which fluid pressure of the comestible fluid in the nozzle is at a second pressure lower than the first pressure.

    A method of dispensing a comestible fluid, compπsing the steps of:maintaining comestible fluid in a fluid line at a first pressure, the fluid line terminating at a nozzle closed against flow of comestible fluid therethrough;loweπng pressure m the fluid line to a second pressure by moving a surface within the nozzle to enlarge a cavity defined in the nozzle;and opening the nozzle to permit flow of the comestible fluid through the nozzle substantially at the second pressure.

    A method of dispensing a comestible fluid, comprising the steps of:feeding comestible fluid at a first pressure to a nozzle closed by a valve within the nozzle;moving the valve to increase a chamber size within the nozzle and to lower pressure of the comestible fluid to a second pressure;opening the nozzle by moving the valve to an open position after the step of moving the valve to increase the chamber size;and dispensing comestible fluid from the nozzle substantially at the second pressure.

    A method of dispensing a quantity of comestible fluid from a dispensing device with minimal foaming of the comestible fluid, the method comprising the steps of:receiving the quantity of comestible fluid at a first pressure within a chamber in a nozzle, the chamber being at least partially bounded by a surface of a plunger valve;moving the plunger valve to increase a size of the chamber and to reduce pressure of the comestible fluid in the chamber to a second pressure;and moving the plunger valve further to open the nozzle and to dispense the comestible fluid from the nozzle substantially at the second pressure.

    A method for controlling comestible fluid dispensed from a dispensing apparatus, comprising the steps of:providing a comestible fluid held at a first pressure;receiving a quantity of the comestible fluid within a fluid line, the fluid line including a closed nozzle at an end thereof;measuring pressure of the comestible fluid;opening the nozzle to define a dispensing outlet in the nozzle, the dispensing outlet permitting comestible fluid flow out of the nozzle;and determining a volume of comestible fluid dispensed out of the nozzle using the comestible fluid pressure measured.

    A comestible fluid dispensing apparatus, comprising:a fluid line, the fluid line having a nozzle at the end thereof;a volume defining a comestible fluid capacity of the fluid line;and a pressure surface movable to change the volume of the fluid line;a pressure measurement device positioned to measure fluid pressure in the fluid line;an actuator coupled to the nozzle for opening and closing the nozzle;a controller coupled to the pressure measurement device and to nozzle actuator, the controller responsive to pressure measured by the pressure measurement device for controlling timed movement of the actuator.

    A comestible fluid dispensing apparatus, comprising:a comestible fluid pressurizer for pressurizing and maintaining comestible fluid under pressure;a heat exchanger in fluid communication with the pressurizer for cooling comestible fluid passed therethrough;and a nozzle attached to the heat exchanger, the nozzle being located sufficiently close to the heat exchanger to cool the nozzle without comestible fluid dispense from the nozzle.

    A method of maintaining comestible fluid temperature prior to dispense, the method comprising the steps of:directing comestible fluid to a heat exchanger from a source of comestible fluid;cooling the comestible fluid in the heat exchanger to produce cooled comestible fluid;passing the cooled comestible fluid from the heat exchanger to a nozzle for dispense of the cooled comestible fluid;and maintaining the cooled comestible fluid between the heat exchanger and the nozzle below ambient temperature by heat exchange between the heat exchanger and the cooled comestible fluid within the nozzle.

    A method of maintaining comestible fluid temperature in a fluid dispensing nozzle, comprising the steps of:flowing comestible fluid through a heat exchanger;cooling the comestible fluid in the heat exchanger;flowing the comestible fluid into the dispensing nozzle;and generating convective recirculation of the comestible fluid in the dispensing nozzle between a heat source defined by sunoundings of the dispensing nozzle and a cold source defined by the heat exchanger.

    A heat transfer apparatus for a comestible liquid dispenser, the heat transfer apparatus comprising:at least one plate;a pair of coolant ports in fluid communication with a first side of the at least one plate;a pair of comestible fluid ports in fluid communication with a second side of the at least one plate;a fluid passage defined between the pair of comestible fluid ports, the fluid passage having a first portion immersed in comestible liquid during operation of the apparatus and a second portion not immersed in comestible liquid during operation of the apparatus;and at least one plug filling at least part of the second portion of the apparatus.

    A heat exchange apparatus for cooling a comestible fluid, the heat exchange apparatus comprising:a housing, the housing having an internal fluid chamber defined therein, the internal fluid chamber having a maximum fill level;a liquid level sensor in the housing for detecting a liquid level of comestible fluid in the internal fluid chamber;and a vent valve coupled to the liquid level sensor and in fluid communication with the internal chamber over the maximum fill level, the vent valve responsive to the liquid level sensor to close when the liquid level sensor detects fluid at the maximum liquid level in the internal fluid chamber and to open when the liquid level sensor does not detect fluid at the maximum fill level in the internal fluid chamber.

    A method of controlling temperature of comestible fluid in a comestible fluid dispenser, comprising the steps of:passing comestible fluid through a heat exchanger;passing cool refrigerant through the heat exchanger to cool comestible fluid passing through the heat exchanger;passing heated refrigerant through a valve to a compressor;measuring a temperature of the comestible fluid;adjusting the valve in response to measured comestible fluid temperature changes to change refrigerant pressure in the heat exchanger.

    A method of controlling temperature of comestible fluid in a comestible fluid dispenser, comprising the steps of:providing a compressor;passing comestible fluid through a heat exchanger in selective fluid communication with the compressor via a bypass regulator;passing cool refrigerant through the heat exchanger to cool comestible fluid passing through the heat exchanger;measuring a temperature of the comestible fluid;bleeding hot refrigerant via the bypass regulator from the compressor to refrigerant entering the heat exchanger in response to measured comestible fluid temperature changes.
