  1. 1
A method of recording and processing a digital motion image sequence, comprising the steps of:a) recording a digital motion image sequence at a constant capture frame rate to form a temporally ordered sequence of images;b) selecting a plurality of sequential images in the temporally ordered sequence to form a first portion of the digital motion image sequence;c) analyzing the differences in scene content of the images in the first portion to determine a first effective frame rate different from the capture frame rate;d) forming first new frames whose scene content is temporally interpolated between the images in the first portion and temporally ordering the first new frames between the images in the first portion to form a digital motion image sequence having an interpolated first portion with a first effective frame rate;e) selecting two or more sequential images in the temporally ordered sequence different from the images in the first portion to form a second portion of the digital motion image sequence;f) analyzing the differences in the scene content of the images in the second portion to determine a second effective frame rate different from the first effective frame rate;g) forming second new frames whose scene content is temporally interpolated between the images in the second portion and temporally ordering the second new frames between the images in the second portion to form a digital motion image sequence having an interpolated second portion with a second effective frame rate;h) sequentially displaying images in the interpolated first portion at the first effective frame rate and the images in the interpolated second portion at the second effective frame rate.
  2. 2
The method claimed in claim 1, wherein at least one of the first and second effective frame rates is greater than the capture frame rate.
  3. 3
The method claimed in claim 1, wherein the forming steps include one or more processing steps selected from the group comprising frame replication, frame interpolation and frame deletion.
  4. 4
The method claimed in claim 3, wherein the processing step of frame interpolation comprises motion vector interpolation.
  5. 5
The method claimed in claim 1, wherein the steps of determining effective frame rates are performed by an operator.
  6. 6
The method claimed in claim 1, wherein the steps of determining effective frame rates are performed automatically.
  7. 7
The method claimed in claim 1, further comprising the steps of compressing the digital motion image sequence after the recording step;delivering the compressed digital motion image sequence to a remote location;and decompressing the compressed digital motion image sequence prior to the selecting step.
  8. 8
The method claimed in claim 1 claim 2, wherein the display step includes interpolation frames according to instructions in a display device.
  9. 9
The method claimed in claim 7, wherein the compression is MPEG compression.
  10. 10
The method claimed in claim 1, wherein the recording step includes capturing a motion image sequence on silver halide film, developing the film, and scanning the film to produce a digital motion image sequence.
  11. 11
The method claimed in claim 1, wherein the recording step includes capturing a motion image sequence with a video camera and digitizing the captured sequence.
  12. 12
The method claimed in claim 1, wherein the recording step includes capturing a motion image sequence with a digital camera.
