10 claims: 2 independent, 8 dependent

  1. 1
A roll stability control system (24) for an automotive vehicle having a front steering system and a rear steering system, the system (24) comprises a rear wheel steering actuator (101), a rear wheel angular position sensor (40) generating a rear wheel angular position signal, a brake actuator (60), a rollover sensor (28,30,32,34,35,36,38) for producing a rollover signal in response to an impending rollover of the vehicle and a controller (26) coupled to said rear wheel position sensor (40), said rollover sensor (28,30,32,34,35,36,38), said rear wheel steering actuator (101), and said brake actuator (60), characterised in that said controller (26) is operable to generate a rear steering rolling moment gain factor (C2) which relates a steering angle and the rolling moment generated from this steering angle in response to the rear wheel angular position signal, said controller (26) is operable to generate a rear wheel actuator signal in response to the rear steering rolling moment gain factor (C2), a moment to prevent rollover of the vehicle (M r ) and the rollover signal, and said controller is operatable to generate a brake rolling moment gain factor (C1) which relates a brake pressure and the rolling moment generated from this brake pressure in response to a determined brake pressure, said controller is operable to generate a brake actuator signal in response to said rollover signal, the brake rolling moment gain factor (C1) and the moment to prevent rollover, said rear wheel actuator signal controlling said rear wheel steering actuator (101) and the brake actuator signal controlling the brake actuator (60) to prevent the vehicle from rolling over.
  2. 4
A method of controlling roll stability of an automotive vehicle as carried out by the roll stability control system [24] according to one of the claims 1 to 3, characterised in that the method comprises the steps of determining a roll angle estimate in response to the rollover signal and controlling the rear wheel steering actuator (101) and the brake actuator (60) to form a tyre force vector in response to the roll angle estimate.
  3. 7
A motor vehicle characterised in that the vehicle includes a stability control system as claimed in any of claims 1 to 3.
