  1. 1
System for transmission coordination, comprising:a first radio transceiver (120, 140) operating in accordance with a first communication protocol and using a frequency band and configured to communicate with an access point (20, 30) in accordance with the first communication protocol;a second radio transceiver (130, 150) mounted in a housing (100, 110) together with the first radio transceiver (120, 140) and operating in accordance with a second communication protocol, different from said first communication protocol, and using said frequency band;and a coordinator associated with the access point (20, 30) for operating the access point (20, 30) to transmit command signals, in turn, activating the first radio transceiver (120, 140), deactivating the first radio transceiver (120, 140), activating the second radio transceiver (130, 150), and deactivating the second radio transceiver (130, 150), wherein the first communication protocol is the IEEE 802.11 protocol, characterized in that said command signals include a global Clear to Send (CTS) signal (430) to deactivate the first radio transceiver (120, 140) for a Network Allocation Vector (NAV) period (320), to activate the second transceiver (130,150) during the NAV period (320) , and to deactivate the second transceiver (130, 150) after completion of the NAV period (320).
  2. 12
The system (10) of any of claims 1 to 3, wherein:said first communication protocol has a power save operating mode, and said coordinator deactivating the first radio transceiver (120, 140) and activating the second radio transceiver (130, 150) when said first radio transceiver (120, 140) is in said power save mode.
  3. 13
A method for operating a wireless data communications network having at least one access point (20,30) and at least one mobile unit (100,110) including a mobile unit (100,110) arranged to communicate with said access point (20,30) using a first wireless data communication protocol in a first frequency band and to communicate with other devices (160,170,180,190,200,210) using a second wireless data communication protocol different from said first data communication protocol, in said first frequency band, comprising:transmitting command signals from said access point (20,30) in said first communication protocol, said command signals designating a Network Allocation Vectore (NAV) period (320) wherein mobile units (100,110) associated with said access point (20,30) refrain from transmitting using said first data communication protocol;and operating said mobile units (100,110) as a master unit to conduct wireless data communication with said other devices operating as slave units using said second data communication protocol during said designated NAV period (320), wherein said first communications protocol is the IEEE 802.11 protocol, and wherein said command signals comprise global Clear to send (CTS) signals.
  4. 15
A method as specified in claim 14 wherein said data corresponding to voice signals comprises compressed voice signal data.
