Method and apparatus for initializing a synchronizer

Abstract

A method and apparatus for initializing a synchronizer is provided. The initialization circuitry includes a pattern generator (170) for generating an initialization pattern, a pattern detector (178a, 178b) for recognizing the initialization pattern, and a read select circuit (160). After recognition of an initialization pattern, the write pointer is set to a predetermined location in the data buffer of the synchronizer to be read. A predetermined number of cycles after receipt of a unique clock cycle identifier signal (the global frame clock) by the read select circuit, valid data in lockstep with other bitsliced interfaces can be read from the synchronizer.

  1. 1
A method of initializing a synchronizer including the steps of:sending (210) an initialization pattern to a pattern detect logic circuit;detecting (220) the initialization pattern;responsive to detection of the initialization pattern, setting (230) the write pointer to point to a predetermined location in a data buffer circuit;and responsive to detection of a unique clock cycle identifier signal, reading (240) the data from the data buffer a predetermined number of cycles after recognition of the unique clock cycle identifier signal.
  2. 2
An initialization circuit for initializing a synchronizer for synchronizing data from a sending chip to a receiving chip, the initialization circuit including a pattern generator (170) for generating an initialization pattern, the pattern generator being electrically coupled to a unique clock cycle identifier signal (172);a pattern detector (178a, 178b) for detecting the initialization pattern, the pattern detector being electrically coupled to the output of the pattern generator;and a read select circuit (160), wherein the read select circuit is electrically coupled to the data buffer circuit and a unique clock cycle identifier signal, wherein responsive to receipt of a unique clock cycle identifier signal data can be read from the data buffer circuit a predetermined number of cycles after receipt of the unique clock cycle identifier signal.
