Projection screen

Abstract

A screen for reflecting a projected image, in particular to an active screen for reflecting a projected image having improved contrast, and a projection system incorporating such a screen, are provided. The projection screen (16) for displaying an image (18), comprises an active layer (24) whose optical properties in the visible region of the spectrum can be changed under the influence of an electric field; a first electrode (28) and a second electrode (26) for applying an electric field across the active layer (24), wherein at least one electrode is transparent to allow light incident on the screen (16) to reach the active layer (24); and a photosensitive material (30) whose electrical or dielectric properties can be changed under illumination, wherein the photosensitive material (30) is arranged such that the electric field across a localised region of the active layer (24) is dependent on the illumination incident on the photoconductor in that region, with the result that the optical properties of the projection screen (16) at a point are dependent on the intensity of light incident upon the screen (16) at that point.

17 claims: 6 independent, 11 dependent

  1. 1
A projection screen (16) for displaying an image (18), comprising:an active layer (24) whose optical properties in the visible region of the spectrum can be changed under the influence of an electric field;a first electrode (28) and a second electrode (26) for applying an electric field across the active layer (24), wherein at least one electrode is transparent to allow light incident on the screen (16) to reach the active layer (24);and a photosensitive material (30) whose electrical or dielectric properties can be changed under illumination, wherein the photosensitive material (30) is arranged such that the electric field across a localised region of the active layer (24) is dependent on the illumination incident on the photoconductor in that region, with the result that the optical properties of the projection screen (16) at a point are dependent on the intensity of light incident upon the screen (16) at that point.
  2. 8
A projection screen (16) as claimed Claim 1, wherein the layer of active material (24) has a plurality of windows therethrough.
  3. 13
A projection screen (16) for reflecting a projected image (18), comprising:an active layer (24) whose reflectance can be changed under the influence of an electric field;a first electrode (28) and second electrode (26) for applying an electric field across the active layer (24);a photoconductor for controlling current through at least the first electrode (28);wherein the first electrode (28) is structured such that it is able to apply an electric field over a localised region of the active layer (24), and the photoconductor is arranged such that the electric field across a localised region of the active layer (24) is dependent on the illumination incident on the photoconductor in that region, with the result that the local reflectance of the active layer (24) increases with the intensity of light incident upon it.
  4. 14
A projection system (10) for displaying an image (18) comprising a projection screen (16) and a projector for projecting an image (18) onto the screen (16), wherein the screen (16) has:an active layer (24) whose optical properties in the visible region of the spectrum can be changed under the influence of an electric field;a first electrode (28) and a second electrode (26) for applying an electric field across the active layer (24), wherein at least one electrode is transparent;and a photosensitive material (30) whose electrical or dielectric properties can be changed under illumination, wherein the photosensitive material (30) is arranged such that the electric field across a localised region of the active layer (24) is dependent on the illumination incident on the photoconductor in that region, with the result that the optical properties of the projection screen (16) at a point are dependent on the intensity of light incident upon it at that point.
  5. 16
A display system comprising a display screen (16) for displaying an image (18), and a source of invisible radiation (13) for projecting an invisible control image onto the screen;whereby at each point on the screen (16), the optical properties of screen (16) in the visible range are dependent on the intensity of the invisible radiation incident on the screen at that point, such that visible light incident on the screen (16) forms a visible display image thereon representative of the control image.
  6. 17
A display screen for displaying an image (18), wherein for each point on the screen (16), the optical properties of the screen (16) in the visible range are dependent on the intensity of invisible radiation incident on the screen (16) at that point, such that visible light incident on the screen forms a visible display image thereon representative of the invisible radiation image incident on the screen (16).
