21 claims: 7 independent, 14 dependent

  1. 1
Claims of equivalent WO 0031921 A2 Claims:1. A video-on-demand system for causing transmission by one of a plurality of session control managers of a requested program to a requesting subscriber station over a network capable of spectrum reuse between said subscriber station and a coπesponding one of a plurality of nodes disposed between said video-on-demand system and said subscriber station, the video-on-demand system comprising a Logical Node assignor which assigns a logical identification to each of said nodes to identify a coπespondence between each of said nodes and a coπesponding one of said session control managers.
  2. 2
In a network characterized by channel reuse in transmission between intermediate nodes of the network and coπesponding subscriber stations, a method of transmitting a requested program in response to a request by a subscriber station, the method comprising the steps of:responding to a request for said requested program by transmitting, from said intermediate node, a network address of said requesting subscriber station to a control module;assigning a channel between said requesting subscriber station and said intermediate node for transmission of said requested program;transmitting, for receipt by the requesting subscriber station, a program identifier, which uniquely identifies the requested program;assigning a logical identifier based on spectrum reuse, independent of physical organization of said subscriber stations on said network, to said intermediate node;and causing transmission of said requested program with information indicative of said program identifier and said logical identifier.
  3. 5
An apparatus for causing transmission of video programs over a network in response to requests for said video programs from subscriber stations coupled to said network by a coπesponding one of a plurality of hubs, said apparatus comprising:a plurality of control modules, each of said control modules controlling transmission of requested programs to a plurality of subscriber stations;and a node identifier for assigning a node identification value to said hub, said node identification value indicative of a coπespondence between said hub and a coπesponding one of said control modules.
  4. 13
In a hybrid fiber coaxial network for broadcasting video programs from a headend to a plurality of subscriber stations, the network characterized by hubs for coupling coaxial portions to fiber portions of the network, and further characterized by at least a first and a second channel allocated between each of said hubs and coπesponding subscriber stations, apparatus for responding to a program request from said subscriber stations by causing transmission of a requested program, comprising:first means for periodically providing a Logical Node identifier, for identifying a coπespondence between a hub coπesponding to said requesting subscriber station and a control station;second means, responsive to said program request from a requesting one of said subscriber stations, for providing frequency and PIDs, indicative of said requested program, to said requesting subscriber station;and third means, responsive to said second means, for causing transmission of said requested program for receipt by said requesting subscriber station.
  5. 14
An apparatus for causing transmission, over a network, of programming requested by a subscriber station coupled to the network by way of a network confroller that assigns a channel for transmission of requested programming from said network controller to said requesting subscriber station, said network characterized by a first bandwidth between said apparatus and said network confroller, and characterized by a second bandwidth between said network controller and said subscriber station, said second bandwidth being lower than said first bandwidth, said apparatus responding to a request by said requesting subscriber station for a requested program by causing transmission, for receipt by said requesting subscriber station, of a program identifier, which uniquely identifies said requested program, and causing transmission, for receipt by said network confroller of a logical identifier, which uniquely identifies said network controller as a coπesponding network confroller and which is independent of physical organization of said subscriber stations on said network, said apparatus further causing fransmission, for receipt by said requesting subscriber station, of said requested program.
  6. 16
In a network characterized by channel reuse in transmission between a headend, the headend having a plurality of modulators, and a plurality of subscriber stations, a method for identifying a modulator communicating with a first subscriber station, the method comprising the steps of:providing a plurality of logical node identification numbers;assigning a logical node identification numbers to a data stream;transmitting the assigned logical node identification number along with a data stream from the headend using one of the plurality of modulators to a first subscriber station.
  7. 20
In a network characterized by channel reuse in transmission between a headend, the headend having a plurality of modulators, and a plurality of subscriber stations, a method for identifying a modulator communicating with a first subscriber station, the method comprising the steps of:connecting the first subscriber station for communication with the network at a first location;receiving a logical node identification number along with a data sfream at the first subscriber station;sending the logical node identification number and first station identification information to the headend;using the logical node identification number to identify a sending modulator that is communicating with the first subscriber station.
