  2. 3
The system of claims 1 or 2, wherein the measure represents an extent of errors in the detected signals derived from the detected signals and an encoding characteristic of the data.
  3. 4
The system of claims 1-3, wherein the data recovery circuitry processes the detected signals to derive the recovered data and eπors represented in the detected signals, the measure being derived from the eπors.
  4. 5

  5. 6
The system of claims 1-5, wherein the detector comprises first and second detector elements each detecting signals, coπesponding portions of the data recovery circuit generating first and second data signals and first and second measures of quality between the first and second recovered and detected signals, respectively, the control system determining a direction for an adjustment between the detector and the signal source in response to the first and second measures.
  6. 7
The system of claims 1 or 2, wherein the measure represents variations in the detected signals from valid signal levels defined by the constraint.
  7. 10
A data acquisition system within a magnetic disk storage system, the data acquisition system including a servo confrol system for maintaining a relative positional relationship between a fransducer of the data acquisition system and data storage locations comprising signals representative of data and provided on a data storage surface within the magnetic disk storage system, the confrol system receiving information about misalignments in the relative positional relationship between the fransducer and the data storage locations and adjusting the transducer position in response to the information, and the data acquisition system comprising data processing circuitry coupled to receive signals detected from the data storage locations, the data recovery circuitry recovering data from the detected signals, the data acquisition system characterized by:the data recovery circuitry generating a measure of eπors between the recovered data and the detected signals, the measure varying with misalignments in the relative positional relationship between the transducer and the data storage locations in a predetermined manner, and the control system receiving the measure and performing a control function in response to the measure while the data acquisition system retrieves data from the data storage structure.
  8. 12
The system of claims 10 or 11, wherein the detected signals are constrained and the measure is derived from the detected signals in accordance with the constraint.
  9. 13
The system of claims 10-12, wherein the data recovery circuitry processes the detected signals in accordance with partial response maximum likelihood (PRML) data processing to derive both the recovered data and eπors between the detected signals and the recovered data, the measure being derived from the calculated eπors.
  10. 14
The system of claims 10-13, wherein the measure is derived by a first transducer detecting signals from a first set of data storage locations on a first data surface and the control function includes adjusting a position of a second transducer with respect to a second set of data storage locations.
