Damped torque shaft assembly

Abstract

A torque shaft assembly (60) includes a hollow tube (62) with a central axis disposed between and fixedly connected to first and second crankshafts at first and second distal ends (86, 88), respectively, of the tube for movement of an array of connecting members such as push rods. A hollow interior (74) of tube between the first and second crankshafts is filled with a sufficient quantity of flowable inertia material or damping media (70) to absorb vibratory energy by friction during operation of the engine. The hollow interior (74) is preferably filled with a quantity of damping media (70) to a level by volume (V) of about 98% and a preferred flowable inertia material is round steel shot (72). A plurality of spaced-apart devises (134) are fixedly attached to an outer surface (68) of the tube wall surrounding the hollow interior (74). Each clevis includes connection means disposed away from the wall outer surface (68) for connection with an actuator for movement of the array of adjustable devices such as variable stator vanes.

11 claims: 4 independent, 7 dependent

  1. 1
A damped torque shaft assembly (60) for actuating devices (30) on a gas turbine engine (10) comprising:a hollow tube (62) having a tube wall (66) with a wall outer surface (68) surrounding an enclosed hollow interior (74) and circumscribing a tube axis (64);forward and aft crank arms (96, 94) operably connected to said wall and spaced axially apart with respect to said tube axis (64);forward and aft shafts (82, 84) fixedly connected to said forward and aft crank arms (96, 94) respectively;said forward and aft shafts (82, 84) having a shaft axis of rotation (100) about which said tube is pivotable;a plurality of spaced-apart connecting means (134) for connecting linking elements (138) to the actuated devices, said connecting means (134) secured to said tube wall (66) on said wall outer surface (68);and said enclosed hollow interior (74) having a volume (V) sufficiently filled with a quantity of damping media (70) to absorb vibratory energy by friction during operation of the engine.
  2. 4
A shaft assembly (60) as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 3 wherein said connecting means (134) comprises a plurality of spaced-apart clevises (134) secured to said tube wall (66) on said wall outer surface (68), each clevis disposed at a distance (D) away from said wall outer surface (68) for connection with an actuator (164) for movement of said devices (30).
  3. 9
A shaft assembly (60) as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 8 further comprising a spherical bearing (108) means supporting said aft shaft (84).
  4. 11
A shaft assembly (60) as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 10 wherein said tube axis (64) and said shaft axis of rotation (100) are not parallel.
