  1. 1
A data network telephony system (99), referred to hereinafter as DNT system, comprising:a base station (410) connected to a DNT-capable data network (500) and to a wireless transceiver (400) and adapted to operate the transceiver by a two-way, narrow-band, multiple-channel, real-time duplex radio protocol;and a plurality of portable computer-enhanced communicator units (100, 200, 300, 600), including microphone and speaker apparatus, each adapted to communicate with the base station (410) by the two-way real-time radio protocol and to process DNT calls;wherein the base station (410) is further adapted to process DNT calls on the DNT-capable data network (500) and to broadcast and receive the DNT calls to and from the plurality of communicator units (100, 200, 300, 600) via the transceiver (400) as DNT data packets, characterized in that one or more of the communicator units (100, 200, 300, 600) is enhanced with a Digital Signal Processor (101a), referred to hereinafter as DSP, adapted for voice recognition, for recognizing human voice, and for preparing data packets for transmission only for recognized human voice.
  2. 4
A method for minimizing data traffic in a channel, for use in a system (99) providing wireless communication between a portable communication unit (100, 200, 300, 600) and a base station (410) over the channel, wherein the portable communication unit (100, 200, 300, 600) is adapted for Data Network Telephony, the method comprising steps of:a) accepting speech at a microphone (106) at the portable communication unit (100, 200, 300, 600);b) processing the speech by a digital signal processing system (101a), referred to hereinafter as DSP system;and c) preparing and transmitting data packets, characterized in that the DSP system (101a) recognizes human voice, and prepares data packets for transmission only for recognized human voice.
  3. 7
The method of one of claims 4 to 6 wherein the DSP function is provided by a central processing unit (101), referred to hereinafter as CPU, of the portable communication unit (100, 200, 300, 600).
